Bound States for the Spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm Problem in a Rotating Frame

Abstract

In this paper, we study the effects of rotation in the spin-1/2 non-relativistic Aharonov-Bohm problem for bound states. We use a technique based on the self-adjoint extension method and determine an expression for the energies of the bound states. The inclusion of the spin element in the Hamiltonian guarantees the existence of bound state solutions. We perform a numerical analysis of the energies and verify that both rotation and the spin degree of freedom affect the energies of the particle. The main effect we observe in this analysis is a cutoff value manifested in the Aharonov-Bohm flux parameter that delimits the values for the positive and negative energies.

Aharonov–Bohm effect in a Coulomb-type potential under the influence of a cutoff point

K. Bakke

We analyze the influence of a cutoff point on a Coulomb-type potential that stems from the interaction of an electron with electric fields. This cutoff point establishes a forbidden region for the electron. Then, we search for bound state solutions to the Schrödinger equation. In addition, we consider a rotating reference frame. We show that the effects of rotation break the degeneracy of the energy levels. Further, we discuss the Aharonov–Bohm effect for bound states.

Self-adjoint extensions of the Hamiltonian for a charged spin- 1/2 particle in the Aharonov-Bohm field

Francisco Antônio Bezerra Coutinho, Yukihisa Nogami, J. Fernando Perez +1 more

Recently we studied self-adjoint extensions (SAEs) of the Aharonov-Bohm Hamiltonian for a charged Schrodinger particle of spin 0. In this paper we discuss the relation between the SAEs for a spinless particle and those for a spin- 1/2 particle in the same environment. We also consider SAEs when a Coulomb potential is added. We furthermore clarify a few confusing issues which have been discussed in some recent papers regarding the relativistic Dirac particle in the Aharonov-Bohm field.

Universal critical $g$ factor for spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm bound states

Vinícius Salem, Edilberto O. Silva, Fabiano M. Andrade

Whether the spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm Hamiltonian supports bound states has remained controversial since Hagen concluded that no such states exist for a Dirac particle. Here, we show that Hagen's solution corresponds to a particular member of the one-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions that describe the singular Zeeman interaction, and we identify which member the microscopic physics selects. Matching the extension parameter to a finite-radius flux tube yields $ν=0$ precisely at $g=2$, and it does so in every flux sector. The critical $g$ factor is therefore universal, $g_c=2$, and depends on neither the flux sector nor the regularization radius. The flux sector controls the depth of the bound state energy, and we obtain a closed-form expression showing that binding deepens markedly with the integer part of the flux. Hagen's conclusion is thus confirmed and sharpened: it is not a statement about one arbitrary member of a family of extensions, but about the member that the physics selects when the magnetic moment takes its Dirac value, and an anomalous moment is a necessary and sufficient condition for binding in the singular channel.

On the Aharonov-Bohm Effect

Riccardo Adami, Alessandro Teta

Using the theory of self-adjoint extensions, we construct all the possible hamiltonians describing the non relativistic Aharonov-Bohm effect. In general the resulting hamiltonians are not rotationally invariant so that the angular momentum is not a constant of motion. Using an explicit formula for the resolvent, we describe the spectrum and compute the generalized eigenfunctions and the scattering amplitude.

Whirling waves and the Aharonov-Bohm effect for relativistic spinning particles

H. O Girotti, F. Fonseca Romero

The formulation of Berry for the Aharonov-Bohm effect is generalized to the relativistic regime. Then, the problem of finding the self-adjoint extensions of the (2+1)-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian, in an Aharonov-Bohm background potential, is solved in a novel way. The same treatment also solves the problem of finding the self-adjoint extensions of the Dirac Hamiltonian in an Aharonov-Casher background.

Aharonov–Bohm-type effect in the background of a distortion of a vertical line into a vertical spiral

W. C. F. da Silva, K. Bakke

It is analysed Aharonov–Bohm-type effects when a spinless quantum particle is in an elastic medium with the distortion of a vertical line into a vertical spiral. By confining the spinless particle to a cylindrical box, the analogue of the Aharonov–Bohm effect for bound states is observed due to the influence of the topological defect on the allowed energies of the system. It corresponds to the shift in the angular momentum quantum number yielded by the effects of the topology of the distortion of a vertical line into a vertical spiral. In addition, it is analysed the effects of rotation. It is shown that the Aharonov–Bohm effect for bound states exists. Besides, there is an analogue of the coupling between the angular momentum and angular velocity of the rotating frame.

Universal critical ggg factor for spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm bound states
Whether the spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm Hamiltonian supports bound states has remained controversial since Hagen concluded that no such states exist for a Dirac particle. Here, we show that Hagen's solution corresponds to a particular member of the one-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions that describe the singular Zeeman interaction, and we identify which member the microscopic physics selects. Matching the extension parameter to a finite-radius flux tube yields ν=0ν=0ν=0 precisely at g=2g=2g=2, and it does so in every flux sector. The critical ggg factor is therefore universal, gc=2g_c=2gc=2, and depends on neither the flux sector nor the regularization radius.
