Diagrammatic representation of photon echoes and other laser-induced ordering processes in gases

THOMAS W. MOSSBERG, Sven R. Hartmann

A simple diagrammatic approach to the description of laser-induced macroscopic ordering processes in gases is developed. We derive a set of simple rules which can be used to construct diagrams---each of which represents the macroscopic properties of a gaseous sample after it has been excited by a particular sequence of short, resonant, laser-excitation pulses. The features of the diagrams which signify various forms of laser-induced macroscopic ordering, e.g., photon echoes, grating echoes, stimulated echoes, standing-wave echoes, trilevel echoes, nonthermal velocity distributions, etc., are discussed. Important differences between the actions of traveling-wave and standing-wave excitation pulses are pointed out. The diagrammatic technique presented here for gases can easily be generalized to describe laser-induced macroscopic ordering in solids as well.

Reverse Photon Echo as a Method of Investigation of Resonant Medium Parameters

В. А. Зуйков, В. В. Самарцев

The possibilities of the reverse photon echo for obtaining information about the relaxation times and the electrical dipole momentum of the resonant transition are investigated experimentally in ruby (resonant transition 4A2–2E(Ē)). A new method based on the many-pulse excitation of the resonant system by a single travelling wave and by a sequence of standing waves, is proposed. As a result, this system irradiates a series of reverse echo signals, from the decay of their intensities it is possible to define the relaxation times in a single series. These relaxation times are measured at different values of the permanent magnetic field. The different apparatus solutions of these experimental problems are discussed.

Grating stimulated echo

B. Dubetsky, P. R. Berman, Tycho Sleator

A theory of a grating simulated echo (GTE) is developed. The GSE involves the sequential excitation of atoms by two counterpropagating traveling waves, a standing wave, and a third traveling wave. It is shown that the echo signal is very sensitive to small changes in atomic velocity, much more sensitive than the normal stimulated echo. Use of the GSE as a collisional probe or accelerometer is discussed.
