Advances in Anatomic Pathology

Quantum Mechanics and Surgical Pathology: A Brief Introduction

Abstract

Quantum mechanics (QM) and surgical pathology might seem totally unrelated fields of science. Because QM or particle physics explains the very basic structure and function of nature, there are growing interconnections between the fundamentals and applications of QM and biologic sciences. QM is not only applied to the structure of atoms but also probes the structure of biologic molecules, explains their mutational changes and has provided an insight into the basic mechanisms of many different biologic systems. Many of the current applications in biologic sciences, medicine, and surgical pathology rely on the principles of QM. Because surgical pathology uses quantum phenomena such as light and studies disease's alterations that are ultimately governed by quantum changes at nanoscale levels, QM will have potential future implications for the progress of surgical pathology. These might include quantum-enhanced refinements in light, ancillary tools, and interpretation assistance computerized systems. The future of applying the concepts, discoveries, and tools of QM in surgical pathology might create something analogous to quantum biology; that is, quantum pathology or "QuPath."

Quantum physics meets biology

Markus Arndt, Thomas Juffmann, Vlatko Vedral

Quantum physics and biology have long been regarded as unrelated disciplines, describing nature at the inanimate microlevel on the one hand and living species on the other hand. Over the past decades the life sciences have succeeded in providing ever more and refined explanations of macroscopic phenomena that were based on an improved understanding of molecular structures and mechanisms. Simultaneously, quantum physics, originally rooted in a world-view of quantum coherences, entanglement, and other nonclassical effects, has been heading toward systems of increasing complexity. The present perspective article shall serve as a "pedestrian guide" to the growing interconnections between the two fields. We recapitulate the generic and sometimes unintuitive characteristics of quantum physics and point to a number of applications in the life sciences. We discuss our criteria for a future "quantum biology," its current status, recent experimental progress, and also the restrictions that nature imposes on bold extrapolations of quantum theory to macroscopic phenomena.

Quantum Physics, Quantum Biology, Quantum Medicine?

Pedro Bullón

The leading cause and foremost reason for mortality and morbidity in the world is a group known as Noncommunicable Diseases. The best approach to treat them is to evaluate and control the risk factors. There are shared by all these diseases leading to the existence of some meeting points behind all of them. There should be some key to acquire conditions that modify the cells homeostasis and impaired the cell physiology developing different diseases. Physics try to explain the nature of the phenomena that surround us, at first, at the level of our macroscopic perception. Quantum physics studied the atomic and subatomic particles and revolutionized the reality perception with paradoxical and weird concepts. Heisenberg's uncertainty principle established that it is not possible to determine the two characteristic properties of particles with accuracy; measurement affects the system and change it. Subatomic particles have a wave-particle duality that could be in a coherence statement, also can pass through high-energy barriers. Two subatomic particles are entangled, something happening over here can have an instantaneous effect over there, no matter how far away there are. All these concepts have tried to apply to biology and life sciences, especially when classical physics fails to give an accurate description. Quantum biology is behind photosynthesis, mitochondrial respiration, enzyme activity, the sense of smell, animal migration, heredity's fidelity, and consciousness. We can apply all these concepts to diseases pathogeny. So, we describe quantum phenomena in oxidative stress, calcification, signal transduction, vitamin D production, cancer mutations, and microbiome induced pathology. I want to propose that medicine also can be explained by applying quantum physics concepts. It is a new, hard to believe, and an incredible path to be built, but we need to open the treatment options to our patients with new perspectives.

QUANTUM BIOLOGY FROM THEORY TO THE FUTURE OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY: A REVIEW ON A REVOLUTIONARY CHANGE IN OUR PERCEPTION OF LIFE

Mostafa Essam Eissa

Quantum biology is an innovative field that blends quantum mechanics and biology to explore how quantum phenomena influence biological processes. This review discusses the fundamental principles of quantum biology, its potential applications in medicine, materials science and energy production, as well as the ethical implications of its progress. By understanding the quantum intricacies of life, we can gain insights into disease mechanisms, develop innovative materials and harness sustainable energy sources. Quantum mechanics, essential for understanding atomic and subatomic behavior, underpins quantum biology, which examines processes like photosynthesis, olfaction and enzyme catalysis. Key principles include superposition, entanglement and tunneling, which may enhance biological efficiency, sensitivity and precision. Quantum biology’s potential spans various fields: in medicine and pharmacy, it could lead to new diagnostic tools and therapies; in materials science, it could inspire quantum materials for electronics, energy storage and sensing; in energy production, it could inform sustainable energy development through photosynthesis insights. However, ethical considerations are crucial. Quantum-enhanced medical technologies might widen healthcare disparities and advanced quantum materials could have mixed societal impacts. Open dialogue and ethical frameworks are necessary for responsible development. The future of quantum biology is promising, with ongoing research and interdisciplinary collaboration expected to yield innovative discoveries, fostering a sustainable and prosperous future. Quantum Processes of Life

Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman

Biology of life relies on underlying mechanisms active at the biomolecular level. Most of them are dictated by physical laws and principles. Classical physics principles work behind gross-scale bioprocesses, while in single biomolecular phenomena, inter-biomolecular interactions, etc., there is a considerable amount of quantum mechanical phenomena active. Standard quantum mechanics interpretations may be utilized to pinpoint hidden mechanisms as well as to understand underlying principles leading to the creation of the gross structural integrity of biological systems. Slow structural alterations causing regulation of functional moieties, hence raising mutations, may also be understood using quantum mechanics principles. This chapter is dedicated to addressing most of the quantum mechanical aspects of biological life using standard approaches that may generally explain quantum phenomena in biological phases.

Dental Treatment and Quantum Mechanics

Yoshiro Fujii

In clinical practice, dentists sometimes encounter phenomena that cannot be explained by common medical concepts; for example, patients’ bodily symptoms immediately improved after adjusting a denture that was not even inside their mouth, by extracting an infected tooth, and by bringing medicine close to the body. Although it seems difficult to completely elucidate the mechanism through modern medicine, it can be explained using quantum mechanics if it is assumed that symptoms appear because of the pathological waves emitted by the afflicted area of the body. The quantum, the smallest unit of matter composition, exhibits wave-particle duality. The fact that symptoms can be improved simply by bringing dentures or medicines closer to the body indicates that the waves emitted by dentures or medicine interfere with the pathological waves. Thus, the pathological waves are deformed and lead to a change in symptoms. In this way, quantum theory can explain phenomena that are difficult to elucidate in conventional medicine, which are encountered in daily clinical practice. Using biological reactions, unsolved problems in quantum mechanics, such as measurement problems, can be solved.
