Abstract

The Women in Mathematics Day Ireland (WIMDI) has become an annual conference since its inauguration in 2010.The conference is a multi-faceted event that includes plenary talks, academic and industrial research talks, poster sessions for students, and the centrepiece of this year's event has been the celebration and acknowledgement of Sheila Tinney's work in the mathematical sciences and marks the centenary of her birth.Dr. Sheila Tinney was the first Irish woman to receive a PhD in Mathematics, was the first female fellow of DIAS (Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies), was one of the first four women to be admitted to the Royal Irish Academy and also lectured at UCD.This year's event attracted almost 150 people from all over Ireland, and the audience at the event included girls from St Mark's Community School, students, lecturers and general public from around the country.

XVIIth International Congress on Mathematical Physics

Arne Jensen

The International Congress on Mathematical Physics is a major conference in its field that attracts a very wide spectrum of researchers. Held every three years, it provides an overview of recent developments and achievements in mathematical physics. This volume presents the plenary lectures and invited topical session lectures from the XVIIth ICMP, which was held in Aalborg, Denmark, August 2012. It also includes additional material from the Congress. In this volume, one can find survey lectures on orthogonal polynomials, random systems, information theory in physics, several aspects of quantum field theory and quantum mechanics, general relativity, and classical and quantum dynamical systems. The topical sessions covered the following areas: •Dynamical systems, classical and quantum •Equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics •PDE and general relativity •Stochastic models and probability •Operator algebras, exactly solvable models •Quantum mechanics and spectral theory •Quantum information and computation •Quantum many-body theory and condensed matter physics •Quantum field theory •String theory and quantum gravity Readers are exposed to state-of-the-art views on mathematical physics. Several of the plenary lectures give broad surveys on recent activities, for example, in orthogonal polynomials, PDE in mathematical physics, and information theory in physics.

75 years of quantum entanglement : foundations and information theoretic applications : S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences Silver Jubilee Symposium, Kolkata, India, 6-10 January 2011

Archan S. Majumdar, Dipankar Home, Guruprasad Kar

These conference proceedings will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in Physics and Applied Mathematics. Quantum entanglement which is the key ingredient for the storage and distribution of quantum information among the fundamental physical constituents, was first noticed as a key feature of the quantum world seventy-five years ago by Schrodinger. Since then, the long road of development of the theory and applications of entanglement has led to remarkable concepts and prospects such as quantum teleportation, cryptography and computation which are set to revolutionize the field of communication and information transfer. Along this long road have also sprung up many surprises, paradoxes and fascinating puzzles. The S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences Silver Jubilee Symposium on 75 Years of Quantum Entanglement: Foundations and Information Theoretic Applications was organized during January 6th to 10th , 2011 to take stock of the present state-of-art of the subject by bringing together distinguished theorists and experimentalists from all over the world. Lectures by eminent scientists lead to stimulating discussions among the hundred and forty participants including about thirty-five students and post-doctoral fellows in the congenial atmosphere of the Neotia Centre of Excellence for Leadership, Salt Lake, Kolkata. Several poster presentations by young researchers invoked substantial interest among the experts.
