Abstract

Developing intuition about quantum information theory problems is difficult, as is verifying or ruling-out of hypothesis. We present a Matlab package intended to provide the QIT community with a new and powerful tool-set for quantum information theory calculations. The package covers most of the "QI textbook" and includes novel parametrization of quantum objects and a robust optimization mechanism. New ways of re-examining well-known results is demonstrated. QLib is designed to be further developed and enhanced by the community and is available for download at www.qlib.info

QuTiP 5: The Quantum Toolbox in Python

Neill Lambert, Eric Giguère, Paul Menczel +15 more

QuTiP, the Quantum Toolbox in Python (Johansson et al., 2012, Johansson et al., 2013), has been at the forefront of open-source quantum software for the past 13 years. It is used as a research, teaching, and industrial tool, and has been downloaded millions of times by users around the world. Here we introduce the latest developments in QuTiP v5, which are set to have a large impact on the future of QuTiP and enable it to be a modern, continuously developed and popular tool for another decade and more. We summarize the code design and fundamental data layer changes as well as efficiency improvements, new solvers, applications to quantum circuits with QuTiP-QIP, and new quantum control tools with QuTiP-QOC. Additional flexibility in the data layer underlying all “quantum objects” in QuTiP allows us to harness the power of state-of-the-art data formats and packages like JAX, CuPy, and more. We explain these new features with a series of both well-known and new examples. The code for these examples is available in a static form on GitHub ( https://github.com/qutip/qutip-paper-v5-examples ) and as continuously updated and documented notebooks in the qutip-tutorials package ( https://github.com/qutip/qutip-tutorials ).

Bridging Theory and Practice: Teaching Quantum Algorithms Through MATLAB

Matteo Rossi, Giovanni Stanghellini, M. Vénere +5 more

In the last year, quantum computing has rapidly transitioned from a purely theoretical field into applied engineering, where multiple algorithms can approach combinatorial optimization problems, machine learning, and cryptography in novel ways, often achieving speedup compared to classical solutions. In this context, there is an increasing need for educational tools that connect mathematical principles from quantum information theory with practical experimentation. Yet, most existing educational resources remain either highly theoretical or provide fragmented code examples, with limited analysis and applications to real-world use cases. As a result, students’ experiences appear restricted, with non-interactive tools for learning. This work presents a comprehensive framework for teaching quantum computing through interactive resources, developed via MATLAB Live Scripts. By combining theory, executable code, and visualization tools within a single environment, this framework enhances learners’ ability to see and reason about quantum algorithms step by step. Following the principles of Project-Based Learning in STEM education, we present a diverse collection of quantum resources, including algorithms for optimization, communication, and error correction. Each project operates as a self-contained learning unit, offering modularity, white-box implementations, and tools for visualization and analysis. Beyond its educational impact, this framework also employs and extends the MATLAB Support Package for Quantum Computing, offering an open-source, reproducible environment suitable for courses and independent study.
