Penning collisions in a cold gas of trapped metastable helium atoms

Jérémie Léonard, F. Perales, Franck Pereira dos Santos +4 more

Summary form only given. We report progress on an experiment on trapped metastable /sup 4/He(2/sup 3/S/sub 1/) atoms which aims at producing a dense gas of ultra cold atoms, with the goal of reaching Bose-Einstein condensation. We have built a magneto-optical trap (MOT) in which we study the cold collisions, which are the main loss cause limiting the obtainable density.

A dipolar erbium quantum gas microscope

Anne Hébert

Quantum gas microscopy is an exciting platform for the study ofin situatom-atom interactions.Erbium, a dipolar atom, presents an opportunity to extend previous quantum gas microscopy ex-periments to more complex systems influenced by long-range, anisotropic interactions. In this the-sis, I present progress towards a quantum gas microscope of erbium atoms, including details on thedesign of a novel accordion lattice system. This system will allow us to dynamically tune the spac-ing of both the vertical and horizontal optical lattices confining the atoms. In addition, I present onthe sub-second generation of erbium Bose-Einstein condensates, made possible by implementing atwo-stage magneto-optical trap and a crossed optical dipole trap with a tunable geometry.

Setup and Characterization of a Single-Focused Beam Optical Trap for Lithium

Lars Heinen

Within the MOTREMI experiment at the Max-Plank-Institut für Kernphysik a new optical trap was constructed. A already installed magneto-optical trap cools 6Li atoms down to temperatures on the order of 100 μK. From the corresponding atoms an ultracold lithium gas is trapped inside the center of the main vacuum chamber. In the further course of the experiment, ionization measurements with a degenerate quantum gas will be carried out. In order to create theses gases, one needs to surpass the temperature limit of the magneto-optical trap. Traps using a high intensity, far red-detuned focused laser beam are able to achieve temperatures on the order of 100 nK. An intensity stabilization which is able to extend the lifetime of trapped gas was constructed in the scope of this thesis. With the use of two different photodiodes, every intensity level of the laser is covered. The high laser powers which are needed for the trap, can lead to thermal effects in the entire setup. Consequently, the properties of the laser and the optical elements the laser is passing through can change. Therefore, a quantitative analysis of these thermal effects has been carried out. Besides the shift and reduction of the focused laser beam, the thermal effect on the trap size was obtained.
