Cavity electro-optic circuit for microwave-to-optical conversion in the quantum ground state

Wei Fu, Mingrui Xu, Xianwen Liu +9 more

In the development of microwave-to-optical (MO) quantum transducers, suppressing added noise induced by the optical excitation remains a major challenge. Here we report an integrated superconducting cavity electro-optic circuit based on single crystalline thin-film aluminum nitride of ultralow microwave and optical losses. We demonstrate efficient bi-directional MO conversion at milli-Kelvin temperatures, with near-ground state microwave thermal excitation $({\overline{n}}_{\mathrm{e}}=0.09\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06)$, despite the peak power of the optical drive exceeding the cooling power of the dilution refrigerator mixing chamber. Our dynamical study further reveals different light-induced noise generation mechanisms and provides crucial guidelines for optimizing electro-optic circuits in future hybrid microwave-optical quantum links.

Traveling-wave electro-optics for microwave-to-optical quantum transduction

Mohan Shen, Manuel C. C. Pace, Hong X. Tang

High-efficiency microwave-to-optical quantum transduction is crucial for quantum networks and distributed quantum computing. Cavity-based electro-optic transducers have been widely explored due to their cavity-enhanced conversion efficiency, albeit at the compromise of limited transduction bandwidth and strict frequency alignment requirements between microwave and optical modes. A recent advancement in meter-long superconducting electro-optic modulators (SEOM) has demonstrated conversion efficiency approaching that of the cavity-based transducers on a traveling-wave structure while maintaining a broad bandwidth of tens of gigahertz. This paper provides a further theoretical investigation into the dynamics of the microwave-to-optical conversion process in a traveling-wave geometry. Based on this analysis, we propose a traveling-wave electro-optic transducer design featuring near-unity conversion efficiency and tunable conversion frequency.

Research on key problems of quantum state transformation based on cavity electro-opto-mechanical system

Chao Chen, Dewei Wu, Chunyan Yang

How to realize high-fidelity non-classical quantum state transformation in cavity electro-opto-mechanical system is a hot issue in the field of quantum information research. Adjusting the range of the optical detuning amount can indirectly realize the non-classical conversion of the microwave and the optical field. This paper analyzes the effect of driving light detuning on microwave and light conversion. This research work has theoretical and practical significance for the application of quantum state conversion technology of cavity electro-opto-mechanical system in precision quantum measurement and quantum information processing.
