Abstract

We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the influence of dispersion on the temporal mode properties of the spontaneous Raman scattering pumped by picosecond pulses in single mode optical fiber. We model the process of the ultrafast spontaneous Raman scattering, calculate and measure the intensity correlation function of the Raman photons with different dispersion by varying the detuning between pump and Raman photons or changing the optical length. The intensity correlation function decreases with the increase of dispersion induced temporal walk-off both by increasing the detuning and by increasing the fiber length. We evaluate the dispersion parameter of the single mode fiber by fitting the measured data with the theoretical equation we deduced. The estimated value is close to the labelled one. Our study provides a new way to evaluate dispersion parameters of the media in which Raman scattering can occur and is beneficial for efficient distillation of entanglement in optical fibers.

Temporal mode properties of Raman scattering in optical fibers

By investigating the intensity correlation function, we study the temporal mode properties of spontaneous Raman photons generated in single mode fibers pumped by short pulses. We find that the intensity correlation function of the Raman photons is related to the dispersion induced temporal mismatch among the Raman photons generated in different subparts of the fiber. When no temporal mismatch exists, the intensity correlation function only depends on the ratio between the pulse width of the pump and the coherence time of the Raman photons. With the ratio decreasing, the intensity correlation function increase. Our study is helpful for easily creating high-quality true thermal light which will be a useful resource for second-order coherence based remote sensing.

Roles of fiber birefringence and Raman scattering in the spontaneous four-wave mixing process through birefringent fibers

Mengyu Xie, Youn Seok Lee, Ramy Tannous +2 more

We investigate the impact of fiber birefringence and spontaneous Raman scattering on the properties of photon pairs that are generated by the spontaneous four-wave mixing process in birefringent fibers. Starting from the formulation of the theory of four-wave mixing, we show a theoretical model for a generated optical field with the consideration of the Raman scattering and a Gaussian-distributed pump. The theoretical model is then applied for deriving the closed expressions of the photon-pair spectral properties as a function of the fiber birefringence. Also, with the modeled Raman gain, we evaluate the reduction of the pair production rate due to the presence of the Raman effect as well as the contributions of the Raman-scattered photons over a broad wavelength range. The predictions are experimentally verified with a commercial polarization-maintaining fiber.

Processes of Raman scattering of quasi-single-photon pulses in a single-mode optical fiber with pumping are theoretically considered. The peculiarity of the scattering is that the pumping creates non-equilibrium molecular vibrations, which significantly increases the probability of Raman scattering in the optical fiber. Non-equilibrium vibrations are expected to be when the stimulated Raman scattering takes place for the pump pulse. As a result, the length of the optical fiber has been estimated where the probability of the Raman scattering is increased

Stokes-anti-Stokes correlations of light propagating through weakly guiding optical fiber

Ivan V. Panyukov, E. S. Andrianov

Statistical properties of light produced in spontaneous Raman scattering on an ensemble of molecules indicate the quantum nature of this phenomenon. The scattered light is non-classical and has high non-classical intensity correlations between Stokes and anti-Stokes components. The temporal coherence of this light is well investigated, while many questions related to spatial coherence remain open. Recent experiments reveal two peculiar features of the spatial coherence of the Stokes and anti-Stokes light. First, the intensity correlations between Stokes and anti-Stokes light remain non-classical even for macroscopic samples containing many molecules. Second, these correlations decrease when signal propagates through a multi-mode optical fiber: the more propagating fiber modes at Stokes and anti-Stokes frequencies the less the correlations. Moreover, the second-order autocorrelation function of Stokes and anti-Stokes light also decreases with the number of propagating modes in multi-mode fiber. In this paper, we build a model of spontaneous Raman scattering correlations of light produced by an ensemble of molecules and propagating through weakly guiding optical fiber that quantitatively explains all these observations. We show that spacial orthogonality of the fiber modes makes the light propagating through these modes uncorrelated in the standard detection scheme. This leads to suppression of non-classical intensity correlations of the total field in the multi-mode fiber. We find the degree of non-classical correlations on fiber parameters. The obtained results pave the way for engineering of non-classical Stokes -- anti-Stokes correlations.

Spectral study of photon pairs generated in dispersion shifted fiber with a pulsed pump

Xiaoying Li, Xiaoxin Ma, Zhe Yu Ou +3 more

Spectral correlation of photon pairs generated in dispersion shifted fiber by a pulsed pump is theoretically analyzed and experimentally investigated. We first calculate the spectral function of photon pairs according to the deduced two-photon state generated by spontaneous four wave mixing under the assumptions close to the real experimental conditions. We then experimentally study the spectral property of the signal and idler photon pairs generated in optical fiber by photon correlation measurements, and the experimental results agree with the calculation. The investigation is useful for developing fiber-based sources of entangled photon pairs and for studying multi-photon quantum interference with multiple photon pairs.

Propagation of temporal mode multiplexed optical fields in fibers: influence of dispersion

Wen Zhao, Nan Huo, Liang Cui +2 more

Exploiting two interfering fields which are initially in the same temporal mode but with the spectra altered by propagating through different fibers, we characterize how the spectral profiles of temporal modes change with the fiber induced dispersion by measuring the fourth-order interference when the order number and bandwidth of temporal modes are varied. The experiment is done by launching a pulsed field in different temporal modes into an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer, in which the fiber lengths in two arms are different. The results show that the mode mismatch of two interfering fields, reflected by the visibility and pattern of interference, is not only dependent upon the amount of unbalanced dispersion but also related to the order number of temporal mode. In particular, the two interfering fields may become orthogonal under a modest amount of unbalanced dispersion when the mode number of the fields is k ≥ 2. Moreover, we discuss how to recover the spectrally distorted temporal mode by measuring and compensating the transmission induced dispersion. Our investigation paves the way for further investigating the distribution of temporally multiplexed quantum states in fiber network.
