Adiabatic and nonadiabatic evolution of a generalized damped harmonic oscillator

Abstract

In this work we present a simple and elegant approach to study the adiabatic and nonadiabatic evolution of a generalized damped harmonic oscillator which is described by the generalized Caldirola–Kanai Hamiltonian, in both classical and quantum contexts. Based on time-dependent dynamical invariants, we find that the geometric phase acquired when the damped oscillator evolves adiabatically in time provides a direct connection between the classical Hannay’s angle and the quantum Berry’s phase. In addition, we solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for this system and calculate various quantum properties of the damped generalized harmonic one, such as coherent states, expectation values of the position and momentum operators, their quantum fluctuations and the associated uncertainty product.

Exact evolution of the generalized damped harmonic oscillator

Mustapha Maamache, Hichem Choutri

In this paper we use the algebraic and the invariant method to study the time-dependent damped harmonic oscillator from classical and quantum points of view. The solution of the classical equation of motion and the wavefunction solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation are found explicitly. We show that the original time-dependent quantum-mechanical problem is completely related to the well known time-independent harmonic oscillator. In addition, we elucidate the intimate connection between the damped harmonic oscillator (DHO) and the generalized harmonic oscillator (GHO). More importantly, the evolution of the states of the DHO cannot be cyclic, in contradistinction with the states of the GHO. Explicit expressions for both the dynamical and the geometric angles and phases are deduced in the adiabatic limit. The coherent states describing the invariant-angle variables of the classical DHO are constructed; they allow us to recover the classical evolution and invariant from the quantum evolution.

Coherent states and geometric phases of a generalized damped harmonic oscillator with time-dependent mass and frequency

I. A. Pedrosa, D. A. P. de Lima

In this paper, we study the generalized harmonic oscillator with arbitrary time-dependent mass and frequency subjected to a linear velocity-dependent frictional force from classical and quantum points of view. We obtain the solution of the classical equation of motion of this system for some particular cases and derive an equation of motion that describes three different systems. Furthermore, with the help of the quantum invariant method and using quadratic invariants we solve analytically and exactly the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for this system. Afterwards, we construct coherent states for the quantized system and employ them to investigate some of the system's quantum properties such as quantum fluctuations of the coordinate and the momentum as well as the corresponding uncertainty product. In addition, we derive the geometric, dynamical and Berry phases for this nonstationary system. Finally, we evaluate the dynamical and Berry phases for three special cases and surprisingly find identical expressions for the dynamical phase and the same formulae for the Berry's phase.

Evolution of Gaussian wave packet and nonadiabatic geometrical phase for the time-dependent singular oscillator

Mustapha Maamache, Hacene Bekkar

We investigate the dynamics and geometric phases of a time-dependent singular oscillator. We construct certain Gaussian wave packet solutions of the corresponding Schrödinger equation, relate the latter with the classical equation of motion and explore the relationship between the associated quantum and phase angles. It is shown by a simple geometrical approach that the geometrical phase is connected with the classical nonadiabatic Hannay angle of the generalized harmonic oscillator. Our geometric approach is based on a rule for a 'natural transport' of the complex two-dimensional vector in the phase space and the results obtained are quite suggestive of similarities to the quantum mechanical two-state evolution.

Nonadiabatic Geometrical Phase during Cyclic Evolution of a Gaussian Wave Packet

Y. C. Ge, Mark Sheard Child

The Gaussian wave packet solution to the Schr\"odinger equation is studied for time-dependent Hamiltonians. The geometrical phase is obtained for a cyclic wave packet solution of the generalized harmonic oscillator with a nonadiabatic time-periodic Hamiltonian. It is found that the geometrical phase is independent of $\ensuremath{\Elzxh}$, and is equal to one-half of the classical nonadiabatic Hannay angle. The Hannay angle is shown to be independent of the classical action and does not involve averaging.

GENERALIZED HANNAY ANGLE FOR THE MOST GENERAL TIME-DEPENDENT HARMONIC OSCILLATOR

Donald H. Kobe, Jiongming Zhu

The most general time-dependent Hamiltonian for a harmonic oscillator is both linear and quadratic in the coordinate and the canonical momentum. It describes in general a harmonic oscillator with mass, spring “constant,” and friction (or antifriction) “constant,” all of which are time dependent, that is acted on by a time-dependent force. A generalized Hannay angle, which is gauge invariant, is defined by making a distinction between the Hamiltonian and the energy. The generalized Hannay angle is the classical counterpart of the generalized Berry phase in quantum theory. When friction is present the generalized Hannay angle is nonzero. If the Hamiltonian is (incorrectly) chosen to be the energy, the generalized Hannay angle is different. Nevertheless, in the adiabatic case the same total angle is obtained.

Quantum and classical geometric phase of the time-dependent harmonic oscillator

Xiang‐Bin Wang, L. C. Kwek, C. H. Oh

In a recent paper [Y. C. Ge and M. S. Child, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 2507 (1997)], by using a Gaussian wave function, Ge and Child presented a nonadiabatic relation between the quantum Berry phase and the classical Hannay angle for the time-dependent harmonic oscillator. In this paper, we present a perspective for this relation without the use of a trial wave function. In particular, an exact explicit formula for the cyclic evolution over the period T in the parameter space of action invariant is obtained; the $\ensuremath{-}(n+1/2)$ relation between the quantum geometric angle and the Hannay angle is rigorously established.
