Phase Transitions Due to Entropy Gains in Layered Periodic Potts Models on a Square Lattice

Gang Sun, Yohtaro Ueno, Yukiyasu Ozeki

Layered Potts models on a square lattice where ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic bonds are regularly disposed are studied by means of an interface method, analytically and employing Monte Carlo simulations. They are classified into three types depending on the arrangement of bonds and the number of Potts spin states, q : frustrated (FR) models that have frustration, degenerate (DG) models that have a high degree of degeneracy, and fitting models that have a unique ground state apart from the trivial degeneracy. Both FR and DG models are shown to exhibit phase transitions due to entropy gains, as previously predicted. The q dependence of the interface tension and the critical temperature is clarified. We find that there are very similar properties between FR models and the corresponding Ising models. The models with q >4 are suggested to undergo first order phase transitions.

Phase Transitions of Random Binary Magnetic Square Lattice Ising Systems

I. Q. Sikakana

Binary magnetic square lattice Ising system with nearest neighbour interactions were simulated using the Monte Carlo technique. Two types of ions were randomly distributed on the lattice sites, one type interacting ferromagnetic and the other antiferromagnetic. A phase diagram of the ion concentration dependent critical temperature, Tc was deduced. Combined Bethe Peierls approximation and Mean Field theory phase transition results were compared to the results of the present method. An improved accuracy of the approximations of the critical temperatures was observed. The Monte Carlo simulation is thus shown to be a more reliable method for obtaining the physical properties of the random binary two-dimensional Ising system. Finite-temperature order-disorder phase transition in a frustrated bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet in strong magnetic fields

Johannes Richter, Oleg Derzhko, Taras Krokhmalskii

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of the frustrated bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet at low temperatures in the vicinity of the saturation magnetic field. The low-energy degrees of freedom of the spin model are mapped onto a hard-square gas on a square lattice. We use exact diagonalization data for finite spin systems to check the validity of such a description. Using a classical Monte Carlo method we give a quantitative description of the thermodynamics of the spin model at low temperatures around the saturation field. The main peculiarity of the considered two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet is related to a phase transition of the hard-square model on the square lattice, which belongs to the two-dimensional Ising model universality class. It manifests itself in a logarithmic (low-) temperature singularity of the specific heat of the spin system observed for magnetic fields just below the saturation field.
