Abstract

We investigate a special class of nonlinear periodic waves and their stabilities for a Bose–Einstein condensate in a pure cosine nonlinear lattice. It is shown that for a specific range of the lattice parameters, we can obtain two different types of exact periodic waves, one-period and double-period solutions. Landau and dynamical instabilities of these extended states are analyzed. The stability phase diagrams for these exact solutions are identified numerically. Our results indicate that as the modulation amplitude of the nonlinear lattice is increased, the double-period solutions are more stable than the one-period solutions.

Dynamics and Stability of Bose-Einstein Condensates: the Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation with Periodic Potential

Bernard Deconinck, Béla A. Frigyik, J. Nathan Kutz

The cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a lattice potential is used to model a periodic dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensate. Both two- and three-dimensional condensates are considered, for atomic species with either repulsive or attractive interactions. A family of exact solutions and corresponding potential is presented in terms of elliptic functions. The dynamical stability of these exact solutions is examined using both analytical and numerical methods. For condensates with repulsive atomic interactions, all stable, trivial-phase solutions are off-set from the zero level. For condensates with attractive atomic interactions, no stable solutions are found, in contrast to the one-dimensional case.

Period-Doubled Bloch States in a Bose–Einstein Condensate

Bao-Guo Yang, Peng-Ju Tang, Xin-Xin Guo +3 more

We study systematically the period-doubled Bloch states for a weakly interacting Bose–Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice. This kind of state is of form ψ k = e ikx ϕ k ( x ) , where ϕ k ( x ) is of a period twice the optical lattice constant. Our numerical results show how these nonlinear period-doubled states grow out of linear period-doubled states at a quarter away from the Brillouin zone center as the repulsive interatomic interaction increases. This is corroborated by our analytical results. We find that all nonlinear period-doubled Bloch states have both Landau instability and dynamical instability .

Instabilities of a Bose-Einstein condensate with mixed nonlinear and linear lattices

Jun Hong, Chenhui Wang, Yongping Zhang

Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in periodic potentials generate interesting physics on the instabilities of Bloch states. The lowest-energy Bloch states of BECs in pure nonlinear lattices are dynamically and Landau unstable, which breaks down BEC superfluidity. In this paper we propose to use an out-of-phase linear lattice to stabilize them. The stabilization mechanism is revealed by the averaged interaction. We further incorporate a constant interaction into BECs with mixed nonlinear and linear lattices and reveal its effect on the instabilities of Bloch states in the lowest band.

Stability Diagrams of a Bose–Einstein Condensate in a Periodic Array of Quantum Wells

Xue Rui, Liang Zhao-Xin, Weidong Li

With the help of a set of exact closed-form solutions to the stationary Gross–Pitaevskii equation, we comprehensively investigate Landau and dynamical instabilities of a Bose–Einstein condensate in a periodic array of quantum wells. In the tight-binding limit, the analytical expressions for both Landau and dynamical instabilities are obtained in terms of the compressibility and effective mass of the BEC system. Then the stability phase diagrams are shown to be similar to the one in the case of the sinusoidal optical lattice.

Stability of exact solutions of the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic potential in two dimensions

The cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with repulsive nonlinearity and elliptic function potential in two-dimensions models a repulsive dilute gas Bose--Einstein condensate in a lattice potential. A family of exact stationary solutions is presented and its stability is examined using analytical and numerical methods. All stable trivial-phase solutions are off-set from the zero level. Our results imply that a large number of condensed atoms is sufficient to form a stable, periodic condensate. Exact soliton solutions and nonlinear modulation instability in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Lu Li, Zai-Dong Li, Boris A. Malomed +2 more

We find one-, two-, and three-component solitons of the polar and ferromagnetic (FM) types in the general (nonintegrable) model of a spinor (three-component) model of the Bose-Einstein condensate, based on a system of three nonlinearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The stability of the solitons is studied by means of direct simulations and, in a part, analytically, using linearized equations for small perturbations. Global stability of the solitons is considered by means of an energy comparison. As a result, ground-state and metastable soliton states of the FM and polar types are identified. For the special integrable version of the model, we develop the Darboux transformation (DT). As an application of the DT, analytical solutions are obtained that display full nonlinear evolution of the modulational instability of a continuous-wave state seeded by a small spatially periodic perturbation. Additionally, by dint of direct simulations, we demonstrate that solitons of both the polar and FM types, found in the integrable system, are structurally stable; i.e., they are robust under random changes of the relevant nonlinear coefficient in time.
