Lasing versus lasing without inversion in an optically thin gain medium near a metal surface

V. G. Bordo

A theory of lasing in an optically thin layer of active centers disposed at a metal surface is developed from first principles. The approach is based on a rigorous account of the local field in the close vicinity of a reflective surface, which provides feedback for dipole oscillations in active centers. It is demonstrated that the gain medium thickness plays a crucial role in the lasing condition and controls switching from conventional lasing to lasing without inversion. The numerical calculations are carried out for erbium doped glass bordering a gold surface where radiation at telecom wavelength (1532 nm) can be generated.

Role of stationary photon statistics in a high-Q cavity mode while it is exciting the active laser medium

Yu. M. Golubev, G. R. Ershov

It has been shown by Yu. M. Golubev, M. I. Kolobov, and I. V. Sokolov, Zh. Éksp. Teor. Fiz. 111 , 1579 (1997) [JETP 84 , 864 (1997)], that when an optical cavity is excited by external radiation from a sub-Poisson laser the cavity mode may be in either a sub-Poisson or a Poisson stationary state. This is not important for a resonant medium which is excited into the upper laser level while interacting with this mode inside the cavity. The degree of regularity of the excitation will be identical to that of the initial light flux incident on the cavity, and this ultimately ensures the same sub-Poisson lasing as for strictly regular pumping of the resonant medium.

Mechanism of Rabi-excitation of discrete modes outside the spectral line of a superradiant laser

E. R. Kocharovskaya, Vl. V. Kocharovsky

By means of numerical modeling of nonlinear and analytical solution of linearized Maxwell-Bloch equations, we find an intriguing regime of a superradiant laser with a symmetric low-Q Fabry-Perot cavity equipped with a distributed feedback of counter-propagating waves. We find that, in a wide range of parameters, there is lasing of a strongly-asymmetric self-modulated powerful polariton mode accompanied by excitation of several almost symmetric weak polariton or electromagnetic modes. The frequency of the powerful mode is approximately coincides with a center of the laser spectral line, and the frequencies of the weak modes are outside the spectral line of an active medium. We show that such a lasing takes place due to formation of a self-consistent inhomogeneous asymmetric grating of population inversion of active centers that provides undamped Rabi oscillations of the population inversion and dipole moments of centers. The grating makes the powerful ‘central’ mode strongly asymmetric, and the Rabi oscillations of active centers excite the weak ‘sideband’ modes due to the quadratic resonant nonlinearity of the two-level active medium.
