Peculiarities of spike multimode generation of a superradiant distributed feedback laser

E. R. Kocharovskaya, N. S. Ginzburg, Alexander S. Sergeev

Using one-dimensional semiclassical Maxwell — Bloch equations with account for the coherent polarisation dynamics, we have studied spike generation regimes of a superradiant distributed feedback laser in the case of inhomogeneous broadening of the spectral line of an active medium. By analysing the dynamic spectra of inversion of the active medium and laser radiation, we have revealed the relationship of individual spikes of radiation and their modulation with specific parts in the spectral line of the active medium and mode beatings. It has been shown that the broadening and shift of the lasing spectrum with respect to the initial electromagnetic Bragg-cavity modes is accompanied by a strong spectral gradient of inversion that is typical of the superradiant regimes.

Nonstationary parametric amplification of polychromatic radiation propagating in an extended absorbing resonant medium

Sergei N Bagaev, V. S. Egorov, Igor B. Mekhov +4 more

An experimental and theoretical study of the two-wave interaction (of a probe wave and a pumping wave) of wide-band multimode laser pulses with an optically dense extended resonant medium (metastable neon atoms in a positive glow-discharge column) is presented. Depending on the pumping power and characteristics of the medium, various regimes of interaction between the field and the matter, leading to qualitatively different types of amplification spectra, are realized: a cooperative interaction regime at low pumping powers corresponds to amplification spectra consisting of two peaks, which lie on both sides of the absorption line; in the regime of nonstationary Rabi oscillations (Rabi flopping), the amplification appears in the form of an isolated peak at a frequency close to the resonance in the substance; under certain interaction conditions, a dispersive shape of amplification spectra is observed. A significant gain in the probe field (by several times at a length of 10 cm) is obtained as a result of a nonstationary population inversion upon rotation of the Bloch vector of the resonant medium under the action of a strong pumping field in the course of propagation of the two waves.

Strong-coupling-assisted formation of coherent radiation below the lasing threshold

I. V. Doronin, A. A. Zyablovsky, E. S. Andrianov

The creation of nanoscale lasers that operate above a coherent threshold is a challenging problem. We propose a way to circumvent this issue using systems in which a strong coupling regime is achieved between the light and the active medium. In the strong coupling regime, energy oscillations take place between the EM field in the cavity and the atoms. We show that by applying appropriate time modulation to the pumping, it is possible to control these energy oscillations in such a way that coherence in the laser system appears below the lasing threshold. In this approach, the radiation linewidth is two orders of magnitude smaller than the linewidth of a conventional laser for the same photon number. In addition, the second order coherence function of the output radiation is reduced from two to one before the system reaches a positive population inversion. Our results pave the way for the creation of nanoscale sources of coherent radiation that can operate below the lasing threshold.
