Absolute and ratio measurements of the polarizability of Na, K, and Rb with an atom interferometer

William F. Holmgren, Melissa Revelle, Vincent Lonij +1 more

We measured the ground-state electric-dipole polarizability of sodium, potassium, and rubidium using a Mach-Zehnder atom interferometer with an electric-field gradient. We find ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{Na}}=24.11(2){}_{\mathrm{stat}}(18){}_{\mathrm{sys}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}24}{\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$, ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{K}}=43.06(14)(33)$, and ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{Rb}}=47.24(12)(42)$. Since these measurements were all performed in the same apparatus and subject to the same systematic errors, we can present polarizability ratios with $0.3%$ uncertainty. We find ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{Rb}}/{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{Na}}=1.959(5)$, ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{K}}/{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{Na}}=1.786(6)$, and ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{Rb}}/{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{K}}=1.097(5)$. We combine our ratio measurements with the higher-precision measurement of sodium polarizability by Ekstrom et al. [Phys. Rev. A 51, 3883 (1995)] to find ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{K}}=43.06(21)$ and ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{Rb}}=47.24(21)$.

Light-force technique for measuring polarizabilities

Michael A. Kadar-Kallen, Keith Bonin

We have developed a light-force technique for measuring polarizabilities. This new method uses the polarizaton forces experienced by an atom in the intense, inhomogeneous electric field of a standing-wave laser to deduce the polarizability. Using a Nd:YAG laser at ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{SW}}$=1.064 \ensuremath{\mu}m for the light force, we measured the polarizability of rubidium at this wavelength to be \ensuremath{\alpha}(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathrm{SW}}$)=114\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}9 A${\mathrm{\r{}}}^{3}$ (\ensuremath{\sigma}). Conversion of this ac polarizability to a static value using a semiempirical formula gives a value of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathrm{dc}}$=52 A${\mathrm{\r{}}}^{3}$, within 10% of the best published experimental results.

Polarizabilities of low-lying states of silver

S. G. Porsev, Dmytro Filin, Charles Cheung +1 more

Assembly of ultracold polar molecules containing silver (Ag) from laser-cooled atoms requires knowledge of the dynamic polarizabilities of Ag at convenient laser wavelengths. We present calculations and analysis of the energies and electric-dipole dc and ac polarizabilities of the low-lying states of neutral Ag. Calculations of the properties of the $4{d}^{10}x$ states, where $x=5s,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}6s,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}7s,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}5p,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}6p,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}7p,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}5d,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}6d$, and $4f$, are performed using the linearized coupled cluster single-double method. The properties of the $4{d}^{9}5{s}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{2}D_{5/2,3/2}$ states are obtained within the framework of configuration interaction with 11 and 17 electrons in the valence field. We analyze the different contributions to the polarizabilities and estimate the uncertainties of our predictions.
