Abstract

Assembly of ultracold polar molecules containing silver (Ag) from laser-cooled atoms requires knowledge of the dynamic polarizabilities of Ag at convenient laser wavelengths. We present calculations and analysis of the energies and electric-dipole dc and ac polarizabilities of the low-lying states of neutral Ag. Calculations of the properties of the $4{d}^{10}x$ states, where $x=5s,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}6s,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}7s,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}5p,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}6p,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}7p,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}5d,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}6d$, and $4f$, are performed using the linearized coupled cluster single-double method. The properties of the $4{d}^{9}5{s}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{2}D_{5/2,3/2}$ states are obtained within the framework of configuration interaction with 11 and 17 electrons in the valence field. We analyze the different contributions to the polarizabilities and estimate the uncertainties of our predictions.

Ultracold silver-atom collisions and the formation of silver dimers by photo- and magneto-association

Eite Tiesinga, Jacek A. Kłos, Hui Li +2 more

We have performed three theoretical simulations relevant for describing collisions among laser-cooled silver atoms and for the formation of Ag 2 molecules from these colliding atoms. Firstly, we determined the relativistic electronic structure of Ag 2 molecules in ground and low-lying excited states. Secondly, we computed rotational and vibrational levels of the ground and excited electronic states as well as rovibrationally averaged electric transition dipole moments. Using this knowledge, we analyzed a simplified quantum-mechanical model of the one-photon photoassociation process to form electronically excited Ag 2 from microkelvin Ag atoms and make predictions for lineshapes and saturation effects as functions of laser frequency and intensity. Finally and thirdly, we performed coupled-channels calculations, numerical solutions of sets of coupled radial Schrödinger equations of ultracold ground-state Ag collisions in an external magnetic field. These calculations include the effects of two Born-Oppenheimer potentials as well as hyperfine Fermi-contact and Zeeman interactions. We discuss the expected range of s -wave scattering lengths as well as strengths and distribution of Fano-Feshbach resonances as a function of the magnetic-field strength for the Ag 107 and Ag 109 isotopes. We highlight the periodicity of the scattering length with small changes in the depths of the Born-Oppenheimer potentials. The Fano-Feshbach resonances can be used to magneto-associate ultracold Ag atoms into weakly bound ground-state Ag 2 dimers.

Relativistic coupled-cluster calculations of the polarizabilities of atomic thallium

Yong-Bo Tang, Ningning Gao, Bing-Qiong Lou +1 more

Using the relativistic coupled-cluster method, we calculate the static dipole polarizabilities of the $6p$, $7s$, $7p$, $8s$, $8p$, and $6d$ states and the dynamic dipole polarizabilities of the $6p$ and $7s$ states of the thallium atom. The trivalent thallium atom is computationally treated as a monovalent system, together with all linear and nonlinear terms of single- and double-cluster operators included in the correlation calculations. We observe that the dominating contributions to the static scalar polarizabilities of the $7{s}_{1/2}$, $7{p}_{1/2}$, $8{p}_{1/2}$, and $8{p}_{3/2}$ states are from one or two specific transitions. The matrix elements of these specific transitions can be determined by combining the experimental values of relevant static scalar polarizabilities. A number of magic wavelengths for the $6{p}_{1/2}$--$7s$ and $6{p}_{3/2}$--$7s$ transitions in the range of 488--1300 nm and the longest tune-out wavelength of the ground state are determined. These magic wavelengths and tune-out wavelength may be useful for further thallium experiments. Experimental measurements of the magic wavelengths near 1245 nm would give estimates of the $7{s}_{1/2}$--$7{p}_{1/2}$ and $7{s}_{1/2}$--$7{p}_{3/2}$ transition matrix elements and their ratio. Furthermore, lifetimes of many excited states, as well as the Stark-induced scalar and vector dipole polarizabilities for the $6{p}_{1/2}$--$7{p}_{1/2}$ transition, are also evaluated and compared with available theoretical and experimental values.

Determination of static dipole polarizabilities of Yb atom

Zhi-Ming Tang, Yanmei Yu, Chenzhong Dong

We determine the static values of the scalar and tensor dipole polarizabilities of the ground, 6s6p 3 P 0 o , and 6s6p 3 P 1 o states of the Yb atom. These results can be useful in many experiments undertaken using this atom. We employed a combined configuration interaction (CI) method and a second-order many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) to evaluate energies and electric dipole (E1) matrix elements of many low-lying excited states of the above atom. These values are compared with the other available theoretical calculations and experimental values. By combining these E1 matrix elements with the experimental excitation energies, we estimate the dominant valence correlation contributions to the dipole polarizabilities of the above states. The core contribution is obtained from the finite field approach. We also compare these values with the other theoretical results as there are no precise experimental values that are available for these properties.

Laser cooling and trapping of potassium at magic wavelengths

Marianna S. Safronova, Marianna S. Safronova, Charles W. Clark

We carry out a systematic study of the static and dynamic polarizabilities of the potassium atom using a first-principles high-precision relativistic all-order method in which all single, double, and partial triple excitations of the Dirac-Fock wave functions are included to all orders of perturbation theory. Recommended values are provided for a large number of electric-dipole matrix elements. Static polarizabilities of the 4s, 4p_j, 5s, 5p_j, and 3d_j states are compared with other theory and experiment where available. We use the results of the polarizability calculations to identify magic wavelengths for the 4s-np transitions for $n = 4, 5$, i.e. those wavelengths for which the two levels have the same ac Stark shifts. These facilitate state-insensitive optical cooling and trapping. The magic wavelengths for the $4s-5p$ transitions are of particular interest for attaining a quantum gas of potassium at high phase-space density. We find 20 such wavelengths in the technically interest region of 1050-1130 nm. Uncertainties of all recommended values are estimated.

Highly polar molecules consisting of a copper or silver atom interacting with an alkali-metal or alkaline-earth-metal atom

Michał Śmiałkowski, Michał Tomza

We theoretically investigate the properties of highly polar diatomic molecules containing $^{2}S$-state transition-metal atoms. We calculate potential energy curves, permanent electric dipole moments, spectroscopic constants, and leading long-range dispersion-interaction coefficients for molecules consisting of either a Cu or Ag atom interacting with an alkali-metal (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr) or alkaline-earth-metal (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra) atom. We use ab initio electronic structure methods, such as the coupled cluster and configuration interaction ones, with large Gaussian basis sets and small-core relativistic-energy-consistent pseudopotentials. We predict that the studied molecules in the ground electronic state are strongly bound with highly polarized covalent or ionic bonds resulting in very large permanent electric dipole moments. We find that highly excited vibrational levels have maximal electric dipole moments, e.g., exceeding 13 D for CsAg and 6 D for BaAg. Results for ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}, {\mathrm{Ag}}_{2}$, and CuAg are also reported. The studied molecules may find application in ultracold dipolar many-body physics, controlled chemistry, or precision measurement experiments.

Ground- and excited-rovibrational-state properties of weakly bound helium-silver triatomic molecules

Hiroya Suno

Ground and excited-rovibrational states of weakly bound triatomic molecules containing two helium and one silver atoms are investigated. We consider three systems, $^{4}\mathrm{He}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{4}\mathrm{He}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Ag}$, $^{3}\mathrm{He}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{4}\mathrm{He}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Ag}$, and $^{3}\mathrm{He}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{3}\mathrm{He}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Ag}$. The three-atom Schr\"odinger equation is solved in hyperspherical coordinates using the potential-energy surface represented as the addition of He-He and He-Ag pair interaction potentials. We compute the energy levels and analyze the structural properties by considering averaged pair distances and bond angles, one-dimensional pair and angle distribution functions, and two-dimensional pair-pair and angle-angle distribution functions. All the He-He-Ag bound states are found to possess similar characteristics, displaying obtuse isosceles ($^{4}\mathrm{He}_{2}\mathrm{Ag}$ and $^{3}\mathrm{He}_{2}\mathrm{Ag}$) or scalene ($^{3}\mathrm{He}^{4}\mathrm{He}\mathrm{Ag}$) triangle configurations where the He-Ag distances are nearly fixed and the Ag bond angle is variable.
