Light propagation in an atomic medium with steep and sign-reversible dispersion

We show that ground-state Zeeman coherence prepared by two-photon Raman transitions in alkali atoms results in steep controllable and sign-reversible dispersion. Pulse propagation with small negative as well as positive group velocity of light $(\ensuremath{-}c/5100$ and $c/41000)$ in a Cs vapor cell is reported. Energy exchange between copropagating light components through long-lived Zeeman coherence with enhanced absorption or transmission has been observed.

It is shown that in a transparent medium with a negative permittivity, absorption and stimulated emission of light by an atom can occur without changing its momentum due to transmission of a corresponding momentum in the medium.

Transmission of light pulses by a two-component semiconductor medium

V F Litvinov, V I Molochev, В Н Морозов +3 more

An investigation was made of the properties of a two-component semiconductor (GaAs) medium and, specifically, of its transmission characteristics. It was found that the absorption coefficient was a nonlinear function of the power entering the medium. The "bleaching" theshold was determined. The spectral characteristics of the emission of a GaAs laser and of a GaAs amplifier–absorber system were determined. An experimental study was made of the reduction of the duration of the pulses transmitted by the amplifier–absorber system. Under traveling-wave conditions, the light pulses were compressed by a factor of up to 3 (down to 1 nsec). The experimental results were in agreement with the theoretical calculations.
