Electromagnetically induced transparency and retrieval of light pulses in a Λ-type and a V-type level scheme in Pr3+:Y2SiO5

Fabian Beil, Jens Klein, Gor Nikoghosyan +1 more

We examine electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), the optical preparation of persistent nuclear spin coherences and the retrieval of light pulses both in a Λ-type and a V-type coupling scheme in a Pr 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 crystal, cooled to cryogenic temperatures. The medium is prepared by optical pumping and spectral hole burning, creating a spectrally isolated Λ-type and a V-type system within the inhomogeneous bandwidth of the 3 H 4 ↔ 1 D 2 transition of the Pr 3+ ions. By EIT, in the Λ-type scheme we drive a nuclear spin coherence between the ground-state hyperfine levels, while in the V-type scheme we drive a coherence between the excited-state hyperfine levels. We observe the cancellation of absorption due to EIT and the retrieval of light pulses in both level schemes. This also permits the determination of dephasing times of the nuclear spin coherence, either in the ground state or the optically excited state.

Creation of a high-resolution atomic frequency comb and optimization of the pulse sequence for high-efficiency quantum memory in 167 Er:Y 2 SiO 5

S. Yasui, Masaya Hiraishi, Atsushi Ishizawa +6 more

We created high-resolution atomic frequency combs (AFCs) and optimized the pulse sequence used in AFC memory to realize highly efficient AFC quantum memory using the 167 Er 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 hyperfine level system. As a result, the formation and relaxation times of AFCs were revealed, and AFCs with a resolution of 800 kHz were created by using an appropriate pump light intensity. An efficiency of 0.16% with a memory time of 0.5 µs was achieved even under a zero magnetic field and a 10 ppm Er concentration sample. This result paves the way for realizing highly efficient communication-wavelength AFC quantum memory.

Time- and frequency-domain hybrid optical memory: 16-kbit data storage in Eu^3+:Y_2SiO_5

Masaharu Mitsunaga, Ryuzi Yano, Naoshi Uesugi

We propose and demonstrate a novel type of frequency-selective optical memory that writes and reads the data in both the time domain and the frequency domain. Temporal 16-bit data were stored by accumulated-photon-echo bit-by-bit storage at 103 frequency addresses within the inhomogeneous line of the (7)F(0)-(5)D(0) transition of Eu(3+):Y(2)SiO(5), which yields a total memory capacity of 1.6 kbits in a single spot of 240-microm diameter. The keys to the success of this experiment are this material's long dephasing time and lack of spectral diffusion.
