Effect of magnetic field on isotope-selective photoionization of atomic samarium using polarized lasers

A C Sahoo, P.K. Mandal, M.L. Shah +2 more

The effect of an external magnetic field on the isotopic selectivity in a two-color three-step polarization-based isotope-selective photoionization of atomic samarium has been studied. Isotope-selective photoionization of samarium is realized through a level scheme having total angular momentum ( J ) sequence 0-1-1-continuum by using two lasers linearly polarized in the same direction and the isotopic selectivity is measured by varying the magnetic field strength perpendicular to the laser polarization axis while keeping the delay between the laser pulses fixed and vice versa. The experimental data have been analyzed and compared with the results of the numerical calculations. The magnetic field perpendicular to the laser polarization axis present in the laser-atom interaction region has been found to degrade the isotopic selectivity. Further, the Lande factor ( ) of the excited energy level 16 690.76 cm −1 ( J = 1) of samarium has been determined from the observed oscillation in the isotopic selectivity. The value of thus obtained, is in good agreement with that reported in the literature.

Two-step selective photoionization of rubidium by using a Ti:sapphire laser

Koji Tamura, Masaki Oba, Takashi Arisawa

A pulsed Ti:sapphire laser (TSL) is applied for what is, to our knowledge, the first time to laser isotope separation. A collimated beam of a rubidium atom with a natural isotope composition ((85)Rb, 72%; (87)Rb, 28%) is excited selectively from the ground state to the 5(2)P(3/2) state by irradiation of the single-longitudinalmode TSL, and is photoionized by successive UV radiation. Ion spectra of each isotope indicate that each isotope is selectively photoionized.

Calculation of ^91Zr optical selectivities in two-color resonant three-photon ionization schemes

Pragada V. Kiran Kumar, Manda Sankari, Manda V. Suryanarayana

Optical selectivity calculations have been carried out for the 91Zr isotope for two-color resonant three-photon photoionization schemes. The density-matrix equations of motion were solved numerically for collinear, counterpropagating, linearly polarized laser beams having Gaussian temporal profile. Calculations were carried out incorporating the effects of Doppler broadening, magnetic sublevel degeneracy, and laser bandwidths. The selectivities and ion yields were determined for various Rabi frequencies and ionization rates. Thereby, the optimal Rabi frequencies for the first and second excitation steps and ionizaton rate for the ionizaton step were determined. The ionization efficiency as a function of detuning of the excitation lasers was also investigated. Two of the photoionization schemes investigated yielded a selectivity of ∼10, with an ion yield of ∼23%.
