Qubit-Based Distributed Frame Synchronization for Quantum Key Distribution

Ye Chen, Chunfeng Huang, Guangshen Lin +3 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a method that enables two remote parties to share a secure key string. Clock synchronization between two parties is a crucial step in the normal operation of QKD. Qubit-based synchronization can achieve clock synchronization by transmitting quantum states between two remote parties, eliminating the necessity for hardware synchronization and thereby greatly reducing the hardware requirements of a QKD system. Nonetheless, classical qubit-based synchronization exhibits poor performance in continuous and high-loss systems, hindering its wide applicability in various scenarios. Here, we propose a qubit-based distributed frame synchronization method that can achieve time recovery in a continuously running system and resist higher losses. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the advanced qubit-based synchronization method Qubit4Sync in a continuously running system. Particularly, the results demonstrate that our method surpasses all previous works in key parameters, including frequency and the synchronization length. We believe our method is applicable to a broad range of QKD scenarios, including drone-based QKD and quantum network construction.

Timing Synchronization in an FPGA-based Real-time Quantum Key Distribution System

Santosh Lacheta, Anurag Agrawal, Munish Kumar Jain +3 more

In Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), the time tagging (with a synchronized timing reference) of photon transmission/reception events is of utmost importance for the purposes of coincidence identification to obtain the sifted key between the communicating terminals (A: Aryabhata and B: Bhaskara). In entangled photon based QKD system, both communicating terminals receive the photons whereas in case of weak coherent photon based QKD system, one terminal transmits the photons, which are received at receiver. For the coincidence identification in QKD system, it is necessary to synchronize the time bases used for time tagging of photons between the communicating terminals operating at independent clocks. This paper presents timing synchronization and FPGA implementation of Time of Flight (ToF) estimation in a NavIC synchronized real time Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) system. The proposed time synchronization and Time of Flight estimation method has been implemented and successfully used in ISRO’s and India’s first successful demonstration of 300m free space entangled photon based real time quantum key distribution system and weak coherent photon based real time QKD system as well. The achieved accuracy for time of flight estimation is 10ns and timing synchronization within 20ns.

Evaluation of the Influence of the Dispersion Properties of a Fiber-Optic Line on the Efficiency of an Algorithm for Single-Photon Synchronization of Quantum Key Distribution System

Konstantin E. Rumyantsev, P.D. Linenko, H. H.-Sh. Shakir

The relevance of the development and modernization of synchronization algorithms, which reduce the synchronization time of the quantum key distribution (QKD) system, while maintaining enhanced security against unauthorized access, is noted. The synchronization algorithm is described, where, to increase security from unauthorized access, quantum pulses are used as synchronizing signals. A quantitative assessment of the influence of the dispersion properties of a fiber-optic line on the efficiency of the two-stage single-photon synchronization algorithm of the autocompensation QKD system is given.
