A Mathematical Model on Optically Pumped Sub-Millimeter Wave Laser by Considering Collision Broadening*

Abstract

In an optically pumped sub-millimeter wave laser (OPSMMWL) system, the infrared (IR) pumping laser with collision broadening which was closer to the practice was considered. A more precise mathematical model was set up. When the IR pumping laser line had the Lorentz function structure, by solving the semi-classic density mat.rix equat.ions, the generalized form of SMMW signal gain Gs and IR pumping signal absorption coefficient Gp were obtained.

Analysis of two-field bistabilities in optically pumped sub-millimeter laser

Chen Jishu

The bistabilities of the pumping laser and the emitting laser in an optically pumped sub-millimeter laser are studied by using a three-level homogeneously broadened two-field semiclassical model. The bistable behaviour varies drastically with the damping rates of the variables of the media. The emergence of bisability is governed by properly choosing the absorptive and gain coefficients of the media and the cavity damping coefficients.

Line shape theory for a Doppler-broadened signal in presence of an infrared pump

Sharmistha Ghoshal, Pradip Narayan Ghosh

A theory of line shape for a Doppler broadened probe in the presence of a strong infrared pump is presented. The optical analog of Bloch equations has been developed; the T1, T2 relaxations are introduced phenomenologically in these equations. Doppler broadening of both the pump and signal transitions are taken into account to obtain the absorption coefficient for the signal. This leads to a Doppler broadened Gaussian function weighted by a pump induced Lorentzian function whose position and linewidth are controlled by the detuning and power respectively of the pump radiation. The absorption coefficient is further modulated by a Lorentzian function containing the fourth power of the radiation. The off-resonance pumping leads to two symmetrically located ‘‘Lamb dips’’ or ‘‘peaks’’ around the Gaussian pedestal for co- and counter propagating laser radiations. A calculation of the line shape of the central sub-Doppler feature for the on-resonance pumping is in good agreement with the observed variation of linewidth with pressure. Numerical results are presented graphically to demonstrate the pump and signal power dependence of the central hole or peak for the bent and cascade-type double resonances. The results obtained confirm the expected behavior based on level populations.

Full quantum theory of optically pumped two-photon laser

Shuhui Sun

In this paper, the model which consists of homogeneous broadened three atomic level is proposed, when both the pump classical field and laser field exist we discuss the gain, frequency pulling and threshold condition of the weak pumping. We also discuss the effect of the coherent pumping on the laser line width. The results are compared with what derived for non-coherent pumping and no-pumping.

Saturation in optically pumped far-infrared lasers

Changxin Wang, Ensheng Fu, Runwen Wang

The dressed-atom approach is used to analyze saturation in an optically pumped three-level system. The small-signal gain is found for the case when two different saturation factors are present, and the result can be conveniently applied to analyze the different saturation behavior of the Raman and line-center transitions in optically pumped far-infrared lasers.

Study of saturation effect and output power of optically pumped FIR lasers

Yao Li, Yikun Lin

In this paper, the saturation effect, output power and the optimum operating pressure of optically pumped FIR lasers were studied theoretically. The density matrix equation of six-level system has been solved, in case the FIR wave signals in the system were not small enough to be neglected.

Gain due to level-dependent collisions

Jing-Yong Ye, Mingsheng Zhan, Shikang Zhou

Based on the level dependence of collision cross sections, a mechanism of light amplification without inversion in a Doppler-broadened three-level system is further studied. In the rate equations, we use a collision-kernel model and consider all of the decay and pumping rates. The emission and absorption profiles are derived by solving the coupled mass-velocity equations numerically. Then, the possibility of obtaining positive gain with noninversion for an ensemble of particles is shown.
