Collective modes in pumped unconventional superconductors with competing ground states

Marvin A. Müller, Pavel A. Volkov, Indranil Paul +1 more

Motivated by the recent development of terahertz pump-probe experiments, we investigate the short-time dynamics in superconductors with multiple attractive pairing channels. Studying a single-band square lattice model with a spin-spin interaction as an example, we find the signatures of collective excitations of the pairing symmetries (known as Bardasis-Schrieffer modes) as well as the order parameter amplitude (Higgs mode) in the short-time dynamics of the spectral gap and quasiparticle distribution after an excitation by a pump pulse. We show that the polarization and intensity of the pulse can be used to control the symmetry of the nonequilibrium state as well as frequencies and relative intensities of the contributions of different collective modes. We find particularly strong signatures of the Bardasis-Schrieffer mode in the dynamics of the quasiparticle distribution function. Our work shows the potential of modern ultrafast experiments to address the collective excitations in unconventional superconductors and highlights the importance of subdominant interactions for the nonequilibrium dynamics in these systems.

Simulation of topological superconductors and their competing orders using photon-mediated interactions

Anjun Chu, Joyce Kwan, Eric Yilun Song +3 more

Realizing and controlling the unconventional pairing featured by topological superconductors remains a central challenge. We introduce a cavity QED quantum simulator that engineers competing chiral $p_x+ip_y$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ orders by tailoring cavity-mediated couplings between atomic pseudospins that emulate momentum-dependent pairing channels. The desired spatially inhomogeneous cavity-mediated couplings can be engineered in a 2D optical lattice using incommensurate cavity-lattice wavelengths naturally occurring in cavity QED systems. This minimal and fully tunable platform enables controlled state preparation and continuous measurement of superconducting order parameters. To probe this competition, the platform enables selective excitation and direct time-domain detection of Bardasis-Schrieffer modes---collective excitations of the subdominant pairing channel. The same competing channel can have an even stronger impact out of equilibrium, where a sudden quench can drive its growth and abruptly reshape the dominant superconducting order, despite the stability of the dominant order in equilibrium. Together, these results establish cavity QED as a controlled setting for revealing hidden competing orders and exploring nonlinear dynamics of topological superconductivity that remain elusive in solid-state and ultracold-atom systems.

Collective Excitations in Unconventional Superconductors and Superfluids

Peter N. Brusov, Pavel P. Brusov

This is the first monograph that strives to give a complete and detailed description of the collective modes (CMs) in unconventional superfluids and superconductors (UCSF&SC). Using the most powerful method of modern theoretical physics - the path (functional) integral technique - authors build the three- and two-dimensional models for s -, p - and d -wave pairing in neutral as well as in charged Fermi-systems, models of superfluid Bose-systems and Fermi-Bose-mixtures. Within these models they study the collective properties of such systems as superfluid 3 He, superfluid 4 He, superfluid 3 He-
