Hybrid Exchange–Measurement-Based Qubit Operations in Semiconductor Double-Quantum-Dot Qubits

Matthew Brooks, Charles Tahan

Measurement-based quantum computing (MBQC) promises an alternative approach to quantum computation that has natural compatibility with error-correction codes at the cost of a polynomial increase in physical qubits. MBQC implementations have previously focused on photonic systems where two-qubit gates are difficult. On the other hand, semiconductor spin qubit systems offer fast two-qubit gates via the exchange interaction. To explore the benefits of MBQC on spin systems, two hybrid measurement-exchange schemes for full qubit control with semiconductor double-quantum-dot spin qubits are considered. Protocol 1 fully realizes the cluster-state approach to MBQC but requires singlet-triplet qubits in a magnetic field gradient. Protocol 2 implements a direct measurement-based replacement for more traditional gate-based encoded operations, without need for magnetic field gradients. Both protocols demonstrate full single- and two-qubit control through a combination of interqubit and intraqubit exchange and measurement onto the singlet-triplet basis. We show that both schemes suppress individual qubit spin-state leakage errors and offer fast gate times, up to known phase and Pauli corrections.

Simple operation sequences to couple and interchange quantum information between spin qubits of different kinds

Sebastian Mehl, David Peter Divincenzo

Efficient operation sequences to couple and interchange quantum information between quantum dot spin qubits of different kinds are derived using exchange interactions. In the qubit encoding of a single-spin qubit, a singlet-triplet qubit, and an exchange-only (triple-dot) qubit, some of the single-qubit interactions remain on during the entangling operation; this greatly simplifies the operation sequences that construct entangling operations. In the ideal setup, the gate operations use the intraqubit exchange interactions only once, and entangling operations with gate times similar to typical single-qubit operations are constructed. The limitations of the entangling sequences are discussed, and it is shown how quantum information can be converted between different kinds of quantum dot spin qubits. These gate sequences are useful for large-scale quantum computation because they show that different kinds of coded spin qubits can be combined easily, permitting the favorable physical properties of each to be employed.

Leakage-protected idle operation of a triangular exchange-only spin qubit

Joseph D. Broz, Jesse C. Hoke, Edwin Acuna +1 more

We characterize the coherence of a triangular exchange-only (EO) spin qubit operated at a leakage-protected idle (LPI) point. The triangular geometry enables independent control of all three pairwise exchange interactions, and the LPI condition occurs when these couplings are turned on simultaneously and tuned to equal strength. In this configuration, the exchange interaction induces an energy gap $E_g = 3J/2$ that suppresses leakage from the computational subspace while leaving the qubit state unaffected. We develop procedures to calibrate the LPI point and measure $E_g$, and use these to characterize the qubit dephasing time over a broad range of gap energies. While operating with large always-on exchange couplings exposes the qubit to charge noise, we find that $\tilde{T}_2^*$ still exceeds that of conventional exchange-only spin qubits for $E_g/h < 60$ MHz. The precise control of simultaneous, all-to-all connected exchange demonstrated here presents a natural path towards improving the performance of EO qubits and also enables novel qubit encodings.

The triangular geometry enables independent control of all three pairwise exchange interactions, and the LPI condition occurs when these couplings are turned on simultaneously and tuned to equal strength.
