Up-conversion and excitation energy transfer between impurity ions in Pr3+: Y2SiO5, Pr3+: Lu2SiO5, and Pr3+: Gd2SiO5crystals

Nikolay V Znamenskiy, Eduard A. Manykin, Yurii V Orlov +6 more

Anti-Stokes fluorescence from the 3 P 0 level of impurity ions was detected in Pr 3+ : Y 2 SiO 5 , Pr 3+ : Lu 2 SiO 5 , and Pr 3+ : Gd 2 SiO 5 crystals non-resonantly pumped by laser radiation with a certain power density. The integrated intensity of the anti-Stokes fluorescence depends nonlinearly on the pump power density. As the atomic concentration of impurity ions was increased from 0.3% to 0.6% and 1.8%, the anti-Stokes fluorescence intensity was saturated due to the concentration quenching of the 1 D 2 term of the impurity Pr 3+ ions. The anti-Stokes fluorescence and quenching of the 1 D 2 term occur due to the cross relaxation of the electronic energy of excited terms of the Pr 3+ ions.

Estimate of the stimulated emission cross section of a four-level active medium from the kinetics of decay of its superradiance

Aleksander A. Makovetskii, R. P. Tishchenko

An analysis is made of the problem of kinetics of the superradiance decay in the case of nonlinear quenching of excited centers in four-level active media. A method is proposed for estimating the initial axial gain and of the stimulated emission cross sections of active media: it is based on a simultaneous analysis of the normalized superradiant flux and integrated population of the active medium. The proposed method is not sensitive to nonlinear quenching. A qualitative analysis is made of the decay of excitation in neodymium pentaphosphate crystals after pulsed excitation with laser radiation of the 0.538 μ wavelength and stimulated emission cross sections are estimated for the 4 F 3/2 → 4 I 11/2 transition in Nd 3+ resulting in lasing at 1.051 μ and at some other wavelengths of this transition.

Quench Dynamics of One-Dimensional Interacting Bosons in a Disordered Potential: Elastic Dephasing and Critical Speeding-Up of Thermalization

Marco Távora, Achim Rosch, Aditi Mitra

The dynamics of interacting bosons in one dimension following the sudden switching on of a weak disordered potential is investigated. On time scales before quasiparticles scatter (prethermalized regime), the dephasing from random elastic forward scattering causes all correlations to decay exponentially fast, but the system remains far from thermal equilibrium. For longer times, the combined effect of disorder and interactions gives rise to inelastic scattering and to thermalization. A novel quantum kinetic equation accounting for both disorder and interactions is employed to study the dynamics. Thermalization turns out to be most effective close to the superfluid-Bose-glass critical point where nonlinearities become more and more important. The numerically obtained thermalization times are found to agree well with analytic estimates.
