Abstract

In variational calculation, we have obtained the binding energy of helium 3 dimer in two dimensions. The existence of one bound state, with the binding energy -0.014 mK, has been definitively found. Also, the existence of a binding state of helium 3 trimer having spin -1/2 with the energy below -0.0057 mK is indicated. This reopens the question of the existence of the gas phase of many helium 3 atoms on the surface of superfluid helium 4. Key words: helium dimer, helium trimer, binding energy of helium 3 dimer. # Dedicated to Academician Krunoslav Ljolje on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

Helium trimers and tetramers in two dimensions and quasi-two-dimensions

Leandra Vranješ Markić, Srećko Kilić

The ground-state properties of ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ and ${}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ trimers and tetramers in infinite and restricted two-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional (2D) space are studied. Using Monte Carlo calculation in two stages successively, simple variational Monte Carlo and diffusion Monte Carlo, we find that all trimers (except one of ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ with spin 3/2) and tetramers are bound. In infinite 2D space the binding energy of ${}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ trimer is $\ensuremath{-}183(1) \mathrm{mK}$ and of tetramer $\ensuremath{-}435(1) \mathrm{mK}.$ In the same environment for ${}^{3}\mathrm{He},$ using Jastrow-Feenberg-Bruch wave functions trimer (spin 1/2) is bound with $\ensuremath{-}0.013(1) \mathrm{mK}$ and tetramer with $\ensuremath{-}0.021(1) \mathrm{mK}.$ Employing in the same procedure ``dimerlike'' wave functions for ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ molecules in infinite 2D space it is discovered that trimer prefers the structure of one dimer and one separate particle while a composition of two separate dimers is preferable for tetramer. In this case binding energies are $\ensuremath{-}0.020(1) \mathrm{mK}$ for trimer and $\ensuremath{-}0.040(1) \mathrm{mK}$ for tetramer. The binding energies of mixed molecules in infinite 2D space are $\ensuremath{-}74.3(4)$ mK ${(}^{3}\mathrm{He}{\ensuremath{-}}^{4}{\mathrm{He}}_{2});$ $\ensuremath{-}14(1)$ mK ${(}^{3}{\mathrm{He}}_{2}{\ensuremath{-}}^{4}\mathrm{He});$ $\ensuremath{-}254(4)$ mK ${(}^{3}\mathrm{He}{\ensuremath{-}}^{4}{\mathrm{He}}_{3});$ $\ensuremath{-}118(2)$ mK ${(}^{3}{\mathrm{He}}_{2}{\ensuremath{-}}^{4}{\mathrm{He}}_{2});$ $\ensuremath{-}11(1)$ mK ${(}^{3}{\mathrm{He}}_{3}{\ensuremath{-}}^{4}\mathrm{He}).$ In holding potentials with well-adjusted parameters there is a drastic increase of binding for trimer and tetramer in both sorts of helium atoms.

Trimer binding in two dimensions

F. Cabral, Ludwig W. Bruch

The ground state energies of loosely bound boson and fermion trimers interacting via Lennard-Jones (12,6) pair potentials in two dimensions are evaluated with variational calculations. Threshold coupling constants for self-binding are determined by extrapolation to zero binding energy. The results are used to give estimates of the binding energy of the 4He trimer and in a discussion of the ordering of dimer and trimer thresholds in two dimensions.

O mogućnosti postojanja dvoatomske molekule helija

Kilić, S., Sunarić, S.

The ground state energics of the helium dimers interacting via Lennard-Jones (12,6) pair potential in two dimensions are evaluated by means of variational calculus. The Ljolje type of pair function is employed. The self-bound states of dimers 4He -4He and 3He –4He are found, while the binding of the dimers 3He -3He is not obtained.

Delta function model for the helium trimer: origin of three-body forces

S. M. Blinder, LAWRENCE L. JUN. LOHR

The Dirac bubble potential, previously used to model the helium dimer, is applied to the trimer. It is shown that the quantum mechanical kinetic energy operator for a three-body system contains terms over and above the analogues of classical pairwise contributions. The additional terms, the ‘Borromean couplings’, are responsible for a dramatic increase in the binding energy of the trimer. For example, 4He3 is bounded by two orders of magnitude more strongly than 4He2, 279 mK versus 1.31 mK, respectively, according to our calculations. Moreover, the trimer is considerably more compact than the dimer, with (r12) decreasing to 9.01 Å from 51.9 Å.

Energy states of helium 4 dimer

Srećko Kilić, Tullio Persi

It is shown that the binding energy of helium-4 dimer for the same class of potentials depends on the set of potential parameters used. The existence of one excited vibrational state of the dimer, which is related to one node of the radial wave function, is also proved for all used potentials.Excited state energy is about (-0,3 mK) × k B .The expectation value of the internuclear distance is about 49 Å in the ground state and 679 Å in the excited state.

Comment on ‘‘The weakest bond: Experimental observation of helium dimer’’ [J. Chem. Phys. 9 8, 3564 (1993)]

Eric S. Meyer, John C. Mester, Isaac F. Silvera

Recently, Luo et al. reported indirect evidence for the formation of dimers in a supersonic expansion of helium. They interpreted their data as confirmation of the existence of a bound state of 4He–4He with a binding energy of order 1 mK. We show that their data are actually consistent with the formation of helium trimers and not dimers. The two control experiments that they performed do not provide any evidence for discarding this alternative hypothesis.
