Broadband Microwave Isolation with Adiabatic Mode Conversion in Coupled Superconducting Transmission Lines

Mahdi Naghiloo, Kaidong Peng, Yufeng Ye +2 more

We propose a traveling wave scheme for broadband microwave isolation using parametric mode conversion in conjunction with adiabatic phase matching technique in a pair of coupled nonlinear transmission lines. This scheme is compatible with the circuit quantum electrodynamics architecture (cQED) and provides isolation without introducing additional quantum noise. We first present the scheme in a general setting then propose an implementation with Josephson junction transmission lines. Numerical simulation shows more than 20 dB isolation over an octave bandwidth (4-8\,GHz) in a 2000 unit cell device with less than 0.05 dB insertion loss dominated by dielectric loss.

Magnetic-Free Traveling-Wave Nonreciprocal Superconducting Microwave Components

Dengke Zhang, Jaw-Shen Tsai

We propose a design to realize integrated broadband nonreciprocal microwave isolators and circulators using superconducting circuit elements without any magnetic materials. To obtain a broadband response, we develop a waveguide-based design by temporal modulations. The corresponding compact traveling-wave structure is implemented with integrated superconducting composite right-/left-handed transmission lines. The calculations show that the bandwidth of 580 MHz can be realized over a nonreciprocal isolation of 20 dB in reflections. Such on-chip isolators and circulators are useful for cryogenic integrated microwave connections and measurements, such as protecting qubits from the amplified reflected signal in multiplexed readout.

From coherent to fermionized microwave photons in a superconducting transmission line

Alberto Tabarelli de Fatis, Stephanie Matern, Gianluca Rastelli +1 more

We investigate superconducting transmission lines as a novel platform for realizing a quantum fluid of microwave photons in a propagating geometry. We predict that the strong photon-photon interactions provided by the intrinsic nonlinearity of Josephson junctions are sufficient to enter a regime of strongly interacting photons for realistic parameters. A suitable tapering of the transmission line parameters allows for the adiabatic conversion of an incident coherent field into a Tonks-Girardeau gas of fermionized photons close to its ground state. Signatures of the strong correlations are anticipated in the correlation properties of the transmitted light.
