Approximation schemes for the study of multi-band Gutzwiller wave functions

Abstract

The minimum of the Gutzwiller energy functional depends on the number of parameters considered in the variational state. For a three-orbital Hubbard model we find that the frequently used diagonal Ansatz is very accurate in high-symmetry situations. For lower symmetry, induced by a crystal-field splitting or the spin-orbit coupling, the discrepancies in energy between the most general and a diagonal Gutzwiller Ansatz can be quite significant. We discuss approximate schemes that may be employed in multi-band cases where a minimization of the general Gutzwiller energy functional is too demanding numerically.

Abstract We give a comprehensive introduction into an efficient numerical scheme for the minimisation of Gutzwiller energy functionals for multi‐band Hubbard models. Our method covers all conceivable cases of Gutzwiller variational wave functions and has been used successfully in previous numerical studies.

Gutzwiller wave functions for correlated electrons: theory and applications

Florian Gebhard

This work covers three lectures on Gutzwiller wave functions for correlated electron systems. In the first lecture, some basic ideas on model Hamiltonians and their motivation are outlined, Gutzwiller's variational approach to Landau Fermi-liquid theory is sketched, and, as a first application, the theory is applied to the one-band Hubbard model where the Brinkman–Rice metal-to-insulator transition is found. The second lecture is devoted to the perturbative calculation of expectation values. In this rather technical part the variational analog of Wick's theorem, Feynman diagrams, and the linked-cluster theorem are introduced. The important differences between the variational approach and the standard Green function technique are the absence of a time-dependence and the flexibility to select the expansion parameter of the variational perturbation theory. When this flexibility is used appropriately, not a single self-energy diagram must be calculated in the limit of large dimensions, i.e. in the limit of large lattice coordination number the expectation values can be evaluated exactly for general Hubbard-type models for all interaction strengths and band fillings. The third lecture covers the application of the theory to ferromagnetism of nickel. After a discussion of the nickel problem, multi-band Hubbard models and Gutzwiller wave functions are introduced and parameterized. The favourable comparison between the results from Gutzwiller theory and a large number of experiments shows that correlations play an important role in itinerant ferromagnets.

RTGW2020: A powerful implementation of DFT + Gutzwiller method

Shiyu Peng, Hongming Weng, Xi Dai

In the present paper, we propose an efficient numerical scheme for Gutzwiller method for multi-band Hubbard models with general onsite Coulomb interaction. Following the basic idea of Deng et al. [Phys. Rev. B 79, 075114 (2009)] and extensions by Lanata et al. [Phys. Rev. B 85, 035133 (2012)], the ground state is variationally determined through optimizing the total energy with respect to the variational single particle density matrix (n0), which is called "outer loop". In the corresponding "inner loop" where n0 is fixed, the non-interacting wave function and the parameters contained in the Gutzwiller projector are determined by a two-step iterative approach. All derivatives of the implementation process have been analytically derived, which allows us to apply some advanced minimization or root-searching algorithms for both the inner and outer loops leading to the highly efficient convergence. In addition, an atomic diagonalization method taking the point group symmetry into account has been developed for the customized design of the Gutzwiller projector, making it convenient to explore many interesting orders at a lower cost of computation. As benchmarks, several different types of correlated models have been studied utilizing the proposed method, which are in perfect agreement with the previous results by DMFT and multi-orbital slave-boson mean field method. Compared with the linear mixing method, the newton method with analytical derivatives shows much faster convergence for the inner loop. As for the outer loop, the minimization using analytical derivatives also shows much better stability and efficiency compared with that using numerical derivatives.

Gutzwiller wave function in the three-band Hubbard model: A variational Monte Carlo study

Akira Oguri, Tetsuro Asahata, Sadamichi Maekawa

The Gutzwiller wave function for the three-band Hubbard model on a two-dimensional ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$ plane is studied by using the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method in the limit ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{d}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}, where ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{d}}$ is the Coulomb repulsion between holes on a Cu site. The VMC results for the energy and the fraction of d holes are compared with those of the Rice-Ueda type Gutzwiller approximation (GA). The difference between the VMC and the GA results are most pronounced at half-filling, and away from half-filling the two results agree well in both the hole-doped and the electron-doped cases. The doping dependence of the momentum distribution function is also studied.

Variational Studies of Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

P. Fazekas

Generalized Gutzwiller-type trial ground states for the Hubbard model are considered, which include extra variational parameters to control the nearest-neighbour charge-charge, charge-spin, and spin-spin correlations. The correlation between doubly occupied and empty sites is found to be particularly important. The results for the large- U regime show qualitative improvement when compared to the predictions of the simple Gutzwiller Ansatz: We get the correct order of magnitude for the energy density, and the band state occupation number is found to be a monotonically decreasing function, with the leading term corresponding to that of the t/U -expansion. We find that to get the small- U limit right, the pair-correlated Ansatz has to be used in conjunction with a cluster Gutzwiller approximation, and introduce a four-site cluster approximation which gives promising results. We argue that small-cluster Gutzwiller approximations get accurate in the limit of large lattice dimensionality.
