Quantum dissipation induced noncommutative geometry

Abstract

The quantum statistical dynamics of a position coordinate x coupled to a reservoir requires theoretically two copies of the position coordinate within the reduced density matrix description. One coordinate moves forward in time while the other coordinate moves backward in time. It is shown that quantum dissipation induces, in the plane of the forward and backward motions, a noncommutative geometry. The noncommutative geometric plane is a consequence of a quantum dissipation induced phase interference which is closely analogous to the Aharanov-Bohm effect. Noncommutative Coordinate Picture of the Quantum Phase Space

Otto C. W. Kong, Wei-Yin Liu

We illustrate an isomorphic representation of the observable algebra for quantum mechanics in terms of the functions on the projective Hilbert space, and its Hilbert space analog, with a noncommutative product in terms of explicit coordinates and discuss the physical and dynamical picture. The isomorphism is then used as a base for the translation of the differential symplectic geometry of the infinite dimensional manifolds onto the observable algebra as a noncommutative geometry. Hence, we obtain the latter from the physical theory itself. We have essentially an extended formalism of the Schrodinger versus Heisenberg picture which we describe mathematically as like a coordinate map from the phase space, for which we have presented argument to be seen as the quantum model of the physical space, to the noncommutative geometry coordinated by the six position and momentum operators. The observable algebra is taken essentially as an algebra of formal functions on the latter operators. The work formulates the intuitive idea that the noncommutative geometry can be seen as an alternative, noncommutative coordinate, picture of familiar quantum phase space, at least so long as the symplectic geometry is concerned.

Quantum Mechanics on a Noncommutative Geometry

T. P. Singh

Abstract. Quantum mechanics in its presently known formulation requires an external classical time for its description. A classical spacetime manifold and a classical spacetime metric are produced by classical matter fields. In the absence of such classical matter fields, quantum mechanics should be formulated with-out reference to a classical time. If such a new formulation exists, it follows as a consequence that standard linear quantum mechanics is a limiting case of an un-derlying non-linear quantum theory. A possible approach to the new formulation is through the use of noncommuting spacetime coordinates in noncommutative differential geometry. Here, the non-linear theory is described by a non-linear Schrodinger equation which belongs to the Doebner-Goldin class of equations, discovered some years ago. Deviating from the canonical: induced noncommutativity

Pedro Núñez, Chryssomalis Chryssomalakos, H. Hernández-Coronado +1 more

The motion of a quantum particle, constrained to move along a space curve via a confining potential, is governed by a hamiltonian that depends on the geometry of the curve. Adiabatic changes in the shape of the curve are shown to give rise to geometric phases. The effect of the latter on the quantization of the motion of the curve itself can be naturally described by a deformation of the canonical commutation relations, providing an example of a noncommutative effective quantum field theory.

Noncommutative geometry and geometric phases

Banasri Basu, Sudipta Dhar, Subir Ghosh

We have studied particle motion in generalized forms of noncommutative phase space, that simulate monopole and other forms of Berry curvature, that can be identified as effective internal magnetic fields, in coordinate and momentum space. The Ahranov-Bohm effect has been considered in this form of phase space, with operatorial structures of noncommutativity. The physical significance of our results is also discussed.

Dissipation and Noncommutativity in Planar Quantum Mechanics

Rabin Banerjee

Noncommutative algebra in planar quantum mechanics is shown to follow from 't Hooft's recent analysis on dissipation and quantization. The noncommutativity in the coordinates or in the momenta of a charged particle in a magnetic field with an oscillator potential are shown as dual descriptions of the same phenomenon. Finally, noncommutativity in a fluid dynamical model, analogous to the lowest Landau level problem, is discussed.

Noncommutativity in Configuration Space Induced by a Conjugate Magnetic Field in Phase Space

Jan Govaerts A

An external magnetic field in configuration space coupled to quantum dynamics induces noncommutativity in its velocity momentum space. By phase space duality, an external vector potential in the conjugate momentum sector of the system induces noncommutativity in its configuration space. Such a rationale for noncommutativity is explored herein for an arbitrary configuration space of Euclidean geometry. Ordinary quantum mechanics with a commutative configuration space is revisited first. Through the introduction of an arbitrary positive definite ∗-product, a one-to-one correspondence between the Hilbert space of abstract quantum states and that of the enveloping algebra of the position quantum operators is identified. A parallel discussion is then presented when configuration space is noncommutative, and thoroughly analysed when the conjugate magnetic field is momentum independent and nondegenerate. Once again the space of quantum states may be identified with the enveloping algebra of the noncommutative position quantum operators. Furthermore, when the positive definite ∗-product is adapted to the conjugate magnetic field, the coordinate operators span a Fock algebra of which the coherent states are the analogues of the structureless points in a commutative configuration space. These results generalise and justify a posteriori within ordinary canonical quantisation the heuristic approach to quantum mechanics in the noncommutative Euclidean plane as constructed and developed by F. G. Scholtz and his collaborators.
