Deviating from the canonical: induced noncommutativity

Abstract

The motion of a quantum particle, constrained to move along a space curve via a confining potential, is governed by a hamiltonian that depends on the geometry of the curve. Adiabatic changes in the shape of the curve are shown to give rise to geometric phases. The effect of the latter on the quantization of the motion of the curve itself can be naturally described by a deformation of the canonical commutation relations, providing an example of a noncommutative effective quantum field theory.

Constrained quantum particles and geometric phases in noninertial frames

Pedro Martín Aguilar, Chryssomalis Chryssomalakos, H. Hernández-Coronado +1 more

We consider particles constrained to move in the close vicinity of a space curve through a steep quadratic potential in the plane normal to the curve. As is known, the effective 1D Hamiltonian that governs the motion along the curve involves both its curvature and torsion. Thus, the adiabatic cyclic deformations of the curve might give rise to geometric phases being accumulated by the particle. We report that this is indeed, in general, the case, and analyze in detail the origin of the phases, as described in both an inertial Cartesian frame and a noninertial one, adapted to the curve. We extend previous work to include non-locally arclength preserving deformations, and derive general formulas for Berry’s curvature in this case.

Quantum Mechanics in Curved Configurational Space

Эрнест Ахмеджанович Тагиров

Different approaches are compared to formulation of quantum mechanics of a particle on the curved spaces. At first, the canonical, quasi-classical and path integration formalisms are considered for quantization of geodesic motion on the Rimannian configurational spaces. A unique rule of ordering of operators in the canonical formalism and a unique definition of the path integral are established and, thus, a part of ambiguities in the quantum counterpart of geodesic motion is removed. A geometric interpretation is proposed for non-invariance of the quantum mechanics on coordinate transformations. An approach alternative to the quantization of geodesic motion is surveyed, which starts with the quantum theory of a neutral scalar field. Consequences of this alternative approach and the three formalisms of quantization are compared. In particular, the field theoretical approach generates a deformation of the canonical commutation relations between coordinates and momenta of a prticle. A possible cosmological consequence of the deformation is presented in short. Key words: quantum mechanics, Riemannian space, geodesic motion, deformation.

The Wigner problem in electrodynamics

A. Horzela

The relation between canonical commutation rules and a shape of acting force is analysed. It is shown that canonical commutation relations and Newtonian equations of motion for a single particle dynamics do imply the force to be of the Lorentz type but the inverse is not true. The example of a single particle motion in a constant magnetic field shows that equations of motion allow an alternative to canonical commutation relations to exist and it is a Lie algebra. The algebra found is of the type of algebras found in studies leading towards noncommutative geometry approaches to physical problems.

Noncommutative classical and quantum mechanics for quadratic Lagrangians (Hamiltonians)

Branko G Dragovich, Zoran Rakić

Classical and quantum mechanics based on an extended Heisenberg algebra with additional canonical commutation relations for position and momentum coordinates are considered. In this approach additional noncommutativity is removed from the algebra by a linear transformation of coordinates and transferred to the Hamiltonian (Lagrangian). This linear transformation does not change the quadratic form of the Hamiltonian (Lagrangian), and Feynman’s path integral preserves its exact expression for quadratic models. The compact general formalism presented here can be easily illustrated in any particular quadratic case. As an important result of phenomenological interest, we give the path integral for a charged particle in the noncommutative plane with a perpendicular magnetic field. We also present an effective Planck constant ħ eff which depends on additional noncommutativity.

Noncommutative geometry and geometric phases

Banasri Basu, Sudipta Dhar, Subir Ghosh

We have studied particle motion in generalized forms of noncommutative phase space, that simulate monopole and other forms of Berry curvature, that can be identified as effective internal magnetic fields, in coordinate and momentum space. The Ahranov-Bohm effect has been considered in this form of phase space, with operatorial structures of noncommutativity. The physical significance of our results is also discussed.

Quantum mechanics of a particle confined to a space curve embedded in three-dimensional Euclidean space

Yong-Long Wang, Meng-Yun Lai, Fan Wang +2 more

Investigating a particle, a charged particle in an electromagnetic field and a particle with spin-orbit interaction confined to a space curve in square and circular cases, respectively, we first find that their effective Hamiltonian can be defined in terms of the ground states of their confined dimensions. And we obtain interesting results: the torsion-induced geometric potential appears in the square case, while in the circular case it vanishes; the geometrically induced gauge potential and Zeeman coupling appear in the circular case; and the geometric gauge potential, curvature and torsion simultaneously emerge in the spin-orbit interaction in the circular case. In the example, a helix nanowire, the previous results are all demonstrated. These results provide a way to generate an artificial gauge field and to manipulate spin transport by designing the geometry of curved nanodevice.
