Abstract

We extend the shortcut to the adiabatic passage method, proposed by Chen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 123003 (2010)], to the creation of an arbitrary coherent superposition of states in a multi-level system. We consider a multi-state system composed of an initial ground state, an excited state and an arbitrary number of final states. In this method, the initial state is linked to the excited state using a pump laser pulse and final states are coupled to the excited state using the Stokes laser pulses.Furthermore, the initial state is coupled to the final states using additional laser fields. We show that the problem can be reduced to the solution of a three-state loop system involving an initial ground state, an excited state and a superposition of final states. This decomposition allows to create an arbitrary coherent superposition of states using the shortcut to the adiabatic passage method. When compared to other strategies, this method provides a fast and robust approach to the coherent superposition of states.

Creation of Coherent Superposition State by Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage in Serial Multi-Λ-Type System

Xiao Qin Shu, Chi Deng, Ye Kuang +2 more

We propose a scheme for creating coherent atomic superposition states via the technique of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) in a Λ-type system where final states are composed of manifold of levels and the intermediate levels could be more than one level. If the pump pulses and Stokes pulses are kept in the same order of ordinary STIRAP, through the control the delay time between the Stokes pulses and pump pulse, we could create arbitrary superposition states in the manifold of levels.

Creation of coherent atomic superpositions by fractional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage

Nikolay V. Vitanov, Kalle‐Antti Suominen, Bruce W. Shore

We discuss the properties of a simple and robust scheme for preparing atoms and molecules in an arbitrary preselected coherent superposition of quantum states - fractional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (fractional STIRAP) - first proposed by Marte et al (1991 Phys. Rev. A 44 R4118). As in STIRAP, the Stokes pulse arrives before the pump pulse, but unlike STIRAP, here the two pulses terminate simultaneously, while maintaining a constant ratio of amplitudes. We extend earlier research and suggest a realization of this scheme with two smoothly varying delayed laser pulses (which can be derived from a single laser), the parameters of the created superposition being controlled by the polarization of the delayed pulse. Furthermore, we provide simple analytic estimates of the robustness of this process against variations in the laser intensity, laser frequency and pulse delay. Finally, we discuss an extension to multistate systems which provides a possibility for creating coherent superpositions of more than two states.

Digital adiabatic passage in multi-state systems

N Irani, M. Saadati-Niari, M. Amniat-Talab

Abstract Digital adiabatic passage in multi-pod and multi-lambda systems is investigated. We show that using digital variation of control fields, one can create a coherent superposition of ground states in multi-state systems. In order to design the propagator at every step, the multi-state systems are simplified to a three-state system using Morris-Shore transformation. In this method, the number of steps is arbitrary and by increasing the number of steps the population of excited states decreases to negligible small values. Sensitivity of the final fidelity with respect to exact value of t max decreases by increasing the number of steps.

Coherent superposition of states in multi-state systems using adiabatic pulses split by a phase jump

Tohid Faraji, M. Amniat-Talab, M. Saadati-Niari

Abstract The generation of arbitrary preselected coherent superposition of states in multi-state systems using adiabatic pulses split by a phase jump has been investigated. We consider a linkage pattern that includes a ground state and N excited states so that the ground state is coupled to the excited states using N pulses with a chirped detuning. In this scheme, time-dependent Rabi frequencies and detuning are used in two steps, and in each step, it is assumed that the Rabi frequencies have the same time dependence. Also, the Rabi frequencies in the second step have a phase jump compared to the first step, and the amount of this phase jump is the same for all pulses. It is shown that by properly adjusting the amount of phase jump in the second step and also the maximum value of Rabi frequencies in both steps, an arbitrary coherent superposition of all states can be created. In this study, the maximum values of Rabi frequencies and detuning are considered to be large enough to establish the adiabatic passage condition, and it is numerically shown that this scheme is insensitive to the change of the maximum value of Rabi frequencies and detuning.

Creation of arbitrary coherent superposition states by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage

Z. Kis, Nikolay V. Vitanov, A. Karpati +2 more

A technique for creation of well-defined preselected coherent superpositions of multiple quantum states is proposed. It is based on an extension of the technique of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) to degenerate levels. As an example, the nine-state system composed of the magnetic sublevels of three levels with angular momenta ${J}_{g}=0$, ${J}_{e}=1$, and ${J}_{f}=2$ is studied in detail. Starting from the $\ensuremath{\mid}{J}_{g}=0,{M}_{g}=0⟩$ state, STIRAP can create an arbitrary preselected coherent superposition between the five ${M}_{f}$ sublevels $({M}_{f}=\ensuremath{-}2,\ensuremath{-}1,0,+1,+2)$ of the ${J}_{f}=2$ level with 100% efficiency in the adiabatic limit. The populations and the phases of the ${M}_{f}$ states in this superposition are determined entirely by the polarizations of the two laser fields. It is shown that this technique allows one to create any superposition of the five ${M}_{f}$ states, that is, to reach any point in the Hilbert space of the ${J}_{f}=2$ manifold, and the corresponding recipes for choosing the laser polarizations are presented.

Creation of coherent superposition state in serial multi-Λ-type system by fraction-STIRAP

A technique for creation of coherent superposition state of initial populated state and final state in serial multi-Λ system is proposed. It is based on an extension of the technique of fractional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage(f-STIRAP).But unlike the f-STIRAP,a new pulse sequence has been proposed,in which each Stoke laser precedes the corresponding pump laser by τ,and the first of Stokes pulses and the last of pump pulses should vanish simultaneously after all the intermediate pulses, which vanish simultaneously too.Furthermore,we provide numerical simulation of the robustness against variations in the pulse delay, and the detuning. In order to create desired superposition state,we must not only keep two-photon resonance, but also keep single-photon resonance.
