Interaction of multi-optical solitions in the three-level gaseous media

Abstract

Optical solitons in gaseous atomic media display many striking features under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Study of theoretical model, which describes these features of optical solitons, has important meaning in optical informational process and propagation. Two-dimensional saturated nonlinear Schrdinger equation, which describes the spatial soliton evolution in the three-level gaseous atomic EIT media, is transformed into the Hamilton system with the symplectic structure. The Hamilton system is discretizated by the symplectic method. The corresponding symplectic scheme is obtained. Evolution behaviors of two and four spatial solitons with the same amplitude in a three-level, gaseous atomic EIT media are simulated by the symplectic scheme. Numerical results further show that the phase difference and the direction of the entering gauss beams have an obvious effect on the interaction of multi-solitons. The entering Gauss beam can form the stable optical solitons in a gaseous atomic media.

Multi-Soliton Propagation and Interaction in Λ-Type EIT Media: An Integrable Approach

Vaduganathan Ramesh Kumar, Prasanta Kumar Panigrahi, Boris A. Malomed

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is well known as a quantum optical phenomenon that permits a normally opaque medium to become transparent due to the quantum interference between transition pathways. This work addresses multi-soliton dynamics in an EIT system modeled by the integrable Maxwell–Bloch (MB) equations for a three-level Λ-type atomic configuration. By employing a generalized gauge transformation, we systematically construct explicit N-soliton solutions from the corresponding Lax pair. Explicit forms of one-, two-, three-, and four-soliton solutions are derived and analyzed. The resulting pulse structures reveal various nonlinear phenomena, such as temporal asymmetry, energy trapping, and soliton interactions. They also highlight coherent propagation, elastic collisions, and partial storage of pulses, which have potential implications for the design of quantum memory, slow light, and photonic data transport in EIT media. In addition, the conservation of fundamental physical quantities, such as the excitation norm and Hamiltonian, is used to provide direct evidence of the integrability and stability of the constructed soliton solutions.

Coherent control of optical soliton interaction via electromagnetically induced transparency with spatial modulation

Yundong Zhang, Xiangchun Tian, Yu Duan +3 more

We propose a scheme to realize the coherent control of optical soliton propagation and interaction in a three level Λ type electromagnetically induced transparency system with the control field being spatially modulated. We show that the spatial perturbation of the control field has no influence on the linear propagation properties and self-phase modulation of the probe field but can produce an equivalent external potential to affect the nonlinear propagation of the probe field. For single soliton propagation, we realize the transmission and trapping of optical solitons via external potential. For double soliton interaction, we realize the coherent control of attractive and repulsion interactions of two optical solitons and design an XNOR logical operation. Finally, for the triple soliton incident case, based on the coherent control of interaction between three solitons via external potential, we design a beam selector. The results obtained here are useful not only for the deep understanding of optical soliton interaction but also for applications in all optical quantum information processing.

Ultraslow optical solitons via electromagnetically induced transparency: a density-matrix approach

Bin Luo, Hang Chao, Hui‐jun Li +1 more

We study the ultraslow optical solitons in a resonant three-level atomic system via electromagnetically induced transparency under a density-matrix (DM) approach. The results of linear and nonlinear optical properties are compared with those obtained by using an amplitude variable (AV) approach. It is found that the results for both approaches are the same in the linear regime if the corresponding relations between the population-coherence decay rates in the DM approach and the energy-level decay rates in the AV approach are appropriately imposed. However, in the nonlinear regime there is a small difference for the self-phase modulation coefficient of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation that governs the time evolution of probe pulse envelope. All analytical predicts are checked by numerical simulations.

Spatial solitons and instabilities of light beams in a three-level atomic medium with a standing-wave control field

Chao Hang, V. V. Konotop, Guoxiang Huang

We consider propagation of a weakly nonlinear probe light beam in a resonant three-level atomic system where an optical lattice is induced by a standing-wave control field and conditions for electromagnetically induced transparency are created. We employ a unified theory to solve the respective nonlinear system of equations in various regimes and investigate formation of spatial optical solitons and instabilities, both analytically and numerically. We show that the effect of the lattice is twofold. On the one hand it allows one to reduce the probe beam intensity necessary for observation of nonlinear effects until the level of one-photon energy, and on the other hand the lattice allows for implementation of different dynamical regimes either by simple manipulation of its parameters or by varying one- and two-photon detunings or by changing the geometry of the incident probe beam.

Stable high-dimensional spatial weak-light solitons in a resonant three-state atomic system

Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang, L. Deng

We study the formation of a nonlinear localized high-dimensional optical beam in a lifetime-broadened three-state atomic system. We show that stable high-dimensional spatial optical solitons with extremely weak-light intensity can occur in such a highly resonant medium through a mechanism of electromagnetically induced transparency. We demonstrate that the interaction between two high-dimensional spatial optical solitons displays interesting properties and these solitons can be easily controlled by manipulating the coupling optical field of the system.

Generation of Solitons and Train of Soliton Pulses in Three Level Λ-Type Cold Atom Electromagnetically Induced Transparency System

Xu Zhao, Xing-Dong Zhao, Lu Zhou

We point out that a train of optical solitons can be generated in a cold-atom system by modulational instability (MI). By numerical simulation, we not only prove that the MI analysis of equations of motion for the atomic-state amplitudes and probe field can be replaced with that of one nonlinear Schrödinger equation, but also give the similarities and differences in the generation of the soliton wave train between the original Maxwell–Schrödinger equations and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Through the numerical simulation of the original equation of motion, we found that the generation of a single soliton or a couple of solitons can be achieved by adjusting the initial pulse amplitude, and propose a quantitative relationship. These results are different from those in previous reports, which mainly focus on the kind of nonlinear pulse that can propagate stably in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium. The merits and shortages of our scheme are also shown by comparing what with a fiber system. By comparison, the cold-atom system can be a candidate for generating solitons and a train of soliton waves.
