Abstract

We present an experimental platform for polarization-entangled photon pairs generation and characterization. The photon pairs are generated using the double-crystal scheme in the presence of the Migdall effect and fully characterized with quantum state tomography. The platform is used to study the dependence of the SPDC polarization on the scattering direction (the Migdall effect). We demonstrate the Migdall effect can significantly decrease the entanglement of produced states. The compensation techniques to overcome the negative action of the Migdall effect and to generate photon pairs in a maximally entangled state are also developed, and 2.7 times entanglement increase is demonstrated.

A double-crystal scheme with full compensation of the Migdall effect

Dmitry N. Frolovtsev, Sergey A Magnitskiy

The double-crystal scheme for polarization-entangled photon pairs generation is presented. The negative impact of the Migdall effect on the polarization entanglement is fully compensated in the scheme. The theory for quantifying of entanglement decrease as the action of the Migdall effect is formulated.

Influence of polarization deviation in SPDC on the degree of entanglement of photon pairs

Dmitry N. Frolovtsev, D. P. Agapov, Sergey A Magnitskiy

We analyze the impact of the polarization deviation [1] on the states of polarization-entangled photons produced via a double crystal scheme. The negative influence of polarization deviation is disclosed and characterized, and we propose the method allowing one to fully compensate the negative action of this effect and to achieve maximum degree of entanglement.

Polarization-entangled photon pairs generation via interference of nonorthogonal quantum states

Dmitry N. Frolovtsev, Sergey A Magnitskiy

We report a new method for generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs in maximally entangled polarization states. Our approach is based on quantum interference between two polarization states which are non-orthogonal. We present necessary and sufficient conditions for generation the photon pair in a maximally entangled state. The effect of dependence of entanglement on the phase between the interfering states of photons is investigated theoretically and demonstrated experimentally with quantum states produced via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the double-crystal scheme.

Polarization dependence on downconversion emission angle: investigation of the ‘Migdall effect’

Radhika Rangarajan, Alfred B. U’Ren, Paul G. Kwiat

Photonic sources based on spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) are now pervasively employed in optical quantum information processing protocols. The recent focus on engineering efficient photonic sources requires a thorough understanding of several of the subtler characteristics of SPDC, which had previously been negligible. Here, we experimentally investigate one such phenomenon – the dependence of the downconversion polarization on emission angle. Additionally, we discuss the significance of this effect from the perspective of better engineering SPDC sources. We also propose techniques, specifically in the context of a two-crystal scheme for generating polarization-entangled photons, to exploit the effect and drastically improve source quality in certain limiting cases.

Entangled photon generation in two-period quasi-phase-matched parametric down-conversion

We proposed and demonstrated a simple but deterministic scheme for generating polarization-entangled photon pairs at telecommunication wavelengths with type-II quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion (QPM-SPDC) having two poling periods. We fabricated a LiNbO3 crystal having two poling periods so as to generate entangled photons at two wavelengths, i.e., 1506 nm and 1594 nm. We characterized the two-photon polarization state with state tomography and confirmed that the state was highly entangled.

We present an experimental scheme based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion to produce multiple photon pairs in maximally entangled polarization states using an arrangement of two type-I nonlinear crystals. By introducing correlated polarization noise in the paths of the generated photons we prepare mixed entangled states whose properties illustrate fundamental results obtained recently in quantum information theory, in particular those concerning bound entanglement and privacy.
