Abstract

We present an experimental scheme based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion to produce multiple photon pairs in maximally entangled polarization states using an arrangement of two type-I nonlinear crystals. By introducing correlated polarization noise in the paths of the generated photons we prepare mixed entangled states whose properties illustrate fundamental results obtained recently in quantum information theory, in particular those concerning bound entanglement and privacy.

Polarization-entangled photon pairs generation via interference of nonorthogonal quantum states

Dmitry N. Frolovtsev, Sergey A Magnitskiy

We report a new method for generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs in maximally entangled polarization states. Our approach is based on quantum interference between two polarization states which are non-orthogonal. We present necessary and sufficient conditions for generation the photon pair in a maximally entangled state. The effect of dependence of entanglement on the phase between the interfering states of photons is investigated theoretically and demonstrated experimentally with quantum states produced via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the double-crystal scheme.

Generation of path-polarization hyperentanglement using quasi-phase-matching in quasi-periodic nonlinear photonic crystal

Guangqiang He, Chengrui Zhu, Yao Jiang +3 more

A compact scheme for the generation of path-polarization entangled photon pairs is proposed by using a quasi-periodic nonlinear photonic crystal to simultaneously accomplish four spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes. Moreover, we report experimental scheme to measure the polarization entanglement and path entanglement separately and theoretically get numerical results that verify some predictions about the hyperentanglement. This method can be expanded for the generation of multi-partite and two-photon path-polarization hyperentanglement in a single quasi-periodic nonlinear photonic crystal structure. This compact quantum light source can be used as a significant ingredient in quantum information science.

Generation of arbitrary frequency-entangled states of two-photon light

Dmitry A. Kalashnikov, V. P. Karasev, Konstantin G. Katamadze +2 more

We consider a new method for the generation of polarization-frequency entangled states of photon pairs. We use a frequency-nondegenerate regime of spontaneous parametric down conversion where the photon pairs (biphotons) are produced with identical polarizations, propagate mostly in the same direction, but differ in frequency. Entanglement is achieved by a coherent superposition of pairs emitted from two nonlinear crystals, with the polarization of the biphotons from the first crystal being changed by a transformer placed between the two crystals. We show that this scheme allows the degree of entanglement to be controlled by the choice of biphoton frequencies.

Experimental conversion of position correlation into polarization entanglement

Chithrabhanu Perumangatt, Alexander Lohrmann, Alexander Ling

This paper presents a method to convert position correlation of photon pairs into polarization entanglement. This is achieved by individually manipulating the polarization state of photons generated in different parts of a nonlinear medium and coherently superposing them. This concept is experimentally demonstrated using photon pairs produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The method is used to implement a compact source producing an observed photon-pair rate of $120\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}000\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}{\text{s}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}/\text{mW}$ with an entanglement fidelity of $0.991\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.013$. This method can be extended to any photon-pair generation process with initial position correlation.

Generating counterpropagating path-entangled photon pairs source using simultaneous collinear spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes of nonlinear photonic crystal

We propose a counterpropagating path-entangled photon pairs source using a quasi-periodic modulated lithium niobate crystal. Through the simulation of joint-spectral amplitude of photons, we confirm that our scheme can produce the maximally path-entangled two-photon states.
