Abstract

We demonstrate novel types of heteronuclear soliton molecules. We investigate properties of steady-state solutions in different systems, propagation dynamics under perturbations, trapping behavior, and various generation possibilities.

Solitons in Stimulated Raman Scattering

Heinz Steudel

Abstract The semiclassical equations of SRS are derived by the following method: The many‐level molecule is described by the Schrödinger equation and subsequently all amplitudes but those of the essential two levels are eliminated by approximate integration. Especially the case of equal group velocities for pump and Stokes wave is considered. Terms describing a frequency shift due to dynamical Stark effect and a change of refraction index by vibrational excitation can be removed by a suitable transformation. Under various, physically different, assumptions the system of molecular and field equations is reduced to the equations describing a quasimonochromatic pulse propagating in a resonant two‐level system, and in this way we can find a rich manifold of solutions. E.g., the 2π‐pulse of self‐induced transparency can be transferred to SRS. By other assumptions we are led to equations defining the Bäcklund transformation for the sine‐Gordon equation. For this case also soliton type solutions can be constructed.

Dynamics of ultrashort optical solitons in a system of nonsymmetric quantum objects

Sergey Vladimirovich Sazonov, N. V. Ustinov

This paper theoretically discusses the propagation of an ultrashort laser pulse consisting of ordinary and extraordinary components in a system of anisotropic quantum centers. The treatment does not use the assumption that the density of quantum centers is small and makes no limitations on the transition dipole moments. It is shown that, if the spectral pulse width is much greater than the frequency of the quantum transitions, the dynamics of its ordinary component obeys a modified sine-Gordon equation that belongs to the class of integrable models. Soliton solutions of the given equation are constructed, and they are classified. Depending on the duration of the soliton, solutions are possible in the form of a 2π pulses (kinks and antikinks) or 0π steady-state traveling pulses (neutral kinks), which have no counterpart in the isotropic case. The behavior of the medium is studied when various types of solitons are transmitted.

Self-consistent solutions of the problem of the interaction of a two-frequency field with a system of three-level atoms in the form of a phase-modulated simulton and a Raman soliton

A. V. Andreev

This paper discusses features of the interaction of a system of three-level atoms with a bichromatic electromagnetic field. Steady-state solutions are found in the form of unimodal and nonunimodal solitary waves corresponding to a pair of pulses in the form of a simulton or a Raman soliton. An analytic form of the solutions is found, corresponding to a phase-modulated simulton and a Raman soliton. The conditions are determined for exciting them. The resulting solutions are of interest from the standpoint of the mechanism for forming the two-frequency coupled excitations observed in various experiments.
