Self-consistent solutions of the problem of the interaction of a two-frequency field with a system of three-level atoms in the form of a phase-modulated simulton and a Raman soliton

Abstract

This paper discusses features of the interaction of a system of three-level atoms with a bichromatic electromagnetic field. Steady-state solutions are found in the form of unimodal and nonunimodal solitary waves corresponding to a pair of pulses in the form of a simulton or a Raman soliton. An analytic form of the solutions is found, corresponding to a phase-modulated simulton and a Raman soliton. The conditions are determined for exciting them. The resulting solutions are of interest from the standpoint of the mechanism for forming the two-frequency coupled excitations observed in various experiments.

Chirped Simultons and Raman Solitons in Three-Level Media

A. V. Andreev

The new self-similar solutions to the problem of bichromatic field interaction with medium of three-level atoms or molecules have been found. The solutions are explicit and hence very helpful to discover the new properties of soliton-like pulses discovered in different experiments.

Rigorous theory of self-induced transparency in the case of a double resonance in a three-level medium

Andrei I. Maimistov

A study is made of steady-state ultrashort electromagnetic radiation pulses of two different wavelengths propagating at the same velocity in a three-level medium under exact resonance conditions. It is shown that such pulses (simultons) correspond to the soliton solutions of the corresponding generalized reduced Maxwell–Bloch equations which thus represent a new example of a system of evolution equations that can be solved exactly by the inverse scattering method. A full characterization of a simulton requires the knowledge of its duration and phase and also of a two-dimensional vector (called the internal polarization vector) with the components equal to the relative amplitudes of the pulses forming a simulton. Collision of two different simultons generally changes their polarizations. An expression is obtained for the angle of rotation of the polarization vectors as a function of the simulton amplitudes and their initial polarizations.

Stimulated Raman spectra of a strong bichromatic field interacting with a three-level atom

Constantine Mavroyannis

We have studied the stimulated Raman spectra arising from the interaction of a three-level atom with two strong electromagnetic fields whose initially populated modes ω a and ω b are in resonance with the two atomic transition frequencies. The Green's function formalism has been used in the limit of high photon densities to calculate the excitation spectra near the frequencies ω = ± ω ab = ± (ω a - ω b ). Expressions are derived for the relative intensities, which describe, apart from the usual Raman peak at the frequency ω = ω ab , four pairs of lorentzian lines peaked at the frequencies ω - ω ab = ± Ω a /√2, ± Ω b /√2, ± Ω and ± 2Ω, respectively, and having spectra widths of the order of 3γ0/4. The parameter Ω is defined as Ω2 = (Ω a 2 + Ω b 2)/2, where Ω a and Ω b are the Rabi frequencies of the two laser fields and γ0 is the spontaneous emission probability. Numerical calculations for selected values of the Rabi frequencies are graphically presented and discussed. Conditions have been established for which Raman gain processes are anticipated to take place.

Self-induced transparency solitons in a nonlinear Kerr host

Tsun-Yee Wang, Sien Chi

We have found a steady-state solution for a pulse propagating in imhogeneously broadened resonant two-level atoms embedded in a dispersive and nonlinear Kerr lossless host medium. The pulse is of an unchirped hyperbolic-secant form with a linear spatial phase delay. There are several salient features in this solution which are different from the results obtained previously. First, for the given parameters of the medium and carrier frequency, the group velocity, the amplitude, and the pulse width are uniquely determined. Second, the group velocity is independent of the density of the resonant atoms. Third, the solution exists in the positive dispersion region, which is different from solitons in fibers.

Pulse Propagation Through a medium Consists of Two Three-Level Atoms

R. N. Rabea, M. A. El-Deberky, M. M. A. Ahmed

The coherent propagation of two optical short pulses through a resonant medium consisting of two three-level atoms in the configuration is investigated. A self-consisting analytical solution without steady state or adiabatic approximations is presented. The electric field in the model studied consists of two co-propagating plane waves, each of which is in near resonance with a transition in the absorber. The density matrix of two three level atoms is studied. Also, the reduced density matrices are stated. The present approach for the semiclassical treatment of resonant coherent interactions in three-level atoms represents a generalization of the Maxwell- Bloch equations for a two-level system. The Maxwell-Bloch equations reduced to the non-linear pendulum equation. The solution shows that the two pulses can propagate simultaneously without loss under some conditions about the pulses and the medium. The propagation of the two pulses through the medium without any constrains approves the self -induced transparency (SIT) phenomenon.

An optical soliton pair among absorbing three-level atoms

Hichem Eleuch, R. Bennaceur

The motion of a pair of solitons propagating through an absorbing three-level system in the lambda configuration is analysed. In the course of this analytic analysis, the existence condition for solitary wave pairs is derived. This condition allows for two possible velocities of the soliton pair.
