Enhancing quantum entanglement of the two-mode squeezed vacuum state via multiphoton catalysis

Abstract

Abstract Multiphoton catalysis is a non-Gaussian operation which has aroused interest recently in quantum information processing. There are two schemes of multiphoton catalysis in the current literature: one uses a beam splitter, while the other uses an optical parametric amplifier. We derive the catalysis operator in the Fock basis for each scheme and find a close relationship between them. We propose to enhance quantum entanglement of the two-mode squeezed vacuum state by performing two-mode multiphoton catalysis independently using two beam splitters. We calculate the optimal entanglement, which is maximized over two independent transmissivities, for the catalyzed states with various pairs of catalysis photon numbers, and find that in each case entanglement is enhanced only when the squeezing parameter is below a certain threshold. We also find that the optimal entanglement is nonzero in the limit of low squeezing, and deduce the analytical forms of the limiting catalyzed state and its entanglement in each case from numerical coefficients.

Enhancing quantum entanglement and quantum teleportation for two-mode squeezed vacuum state by local quantum-optical catalysis

Xue-xiang Xu

I theoretically investigate how the entanglement properties of a two-mode squeezed vacuum state (TMSVS) can be enhanced by operating quantum-optical catalysis on each mode of the TMSVS. The quantum-optical catalysis is simply mixing one photon at the beam splitter and post-select the beam-splitter (BS) output based on detection of one photon, first proposed by Lvovsky and Mlynek [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 250401 (2002)]. I find that there exists some enhancement in the entanglement properties (namely, entanglement entropy, second-order Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlation, and the fidelity of quantum teleportation) in certain parameter ranges spanned by the low transmissivities of the BSs and the small squeezing parameter of the input TMSVS.

Photon catalysis and quantum state engineering

Richard J. Birrittella, M. El Baz, Christopher C. Gerry

Photon catalysis is a technique by which a readily available Gaussian state of light prepared in one mode is incident upon a beam splitter with a discrete number of photons, q, prepared in another mode; the resulting two-mode state is then subjected to single-photon resolving detection for q photons on one of the output modes. By employing beam splitters of different transmissivities and reflectivities, the subsequent single-mode state is shown to possess nonclassical properties such as quadrature squeezing and sub-Poissonian statistics. We consider the case in which the input state is the most general of pure single-mode Gaussian states: a squeezed coherent state. Noting the Gaussianity of the initial state, we demonstrate non-Gaussianity of the photon-catalyzed state by analyzing the quadrature uncertainty product and explicitly illustrate it through the Wigner quasi-probability distribution. We extend this technique to the two-mode squeezed states, whereby we perform photon catalysis on one mode of a two-mode squeezed vacuum state. The resulting correlated two-mode state may have applications in fundamental tests of quantum mechanics, such as violations of Bell’s inequalities, as the detection loophole can be closed due to the non-Gaussianity of the photon-catalyzed state. We also generalize our method to include state projective measurements for l≠q photons.

Entanglement improvement of entangled coherent state via multiphoton catalysis

Weidong Zhou, Wei Ye, Cunjin Liu +2 more

Abstract Based on the conditional measurement and beam splitters, multi-photon catalysis is introduced to each mode of even entangled coherent states (EECSs). The resulted states belong to a kind of Laguerre polynomials excited EECSs. Then the entanglement properties of resulted state are examined according to EPR correlation, concurrence and the teleportation fidelity. For the symmetrical beam splitters, these three quantities can be improved by multi-photon catalysis (⩾3) and only EPR correlation can be enhanced by zero-photon catalysis. Our optimal results over transmissivities of beam splitters show that the unit concurrence can be achieved for all non-zero photon catalysis which indicates that the optimized output approaches Bell-type state. In addition, two single-photon catalysis and zero-photon catalysis present better performance for the improvement of both the EPR correlation and the teleportation fidelity in small and large amplitude regions, respectively. Particularly, it is interesting to notice that both of them can be optimized to be constant for zero-photon catalysis when the amplitude exceeds a certain threshold.

Improvement of entanglement via quantum scissors

Xue-xiang Xu, Liyun Hu, Zeyang Liao

We propose a theoretical scheme for entanglement distillation of the two-mode squeezed vacuum state (TMSVS) by nondeterministic optical nonlinear amplification based on the work of Anisimov et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett.104, 103602 (2010)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.104.103602]. By applying the quantum-scissors operations to both modes of the TMSVS, only the twin vacuum and the twin one-photon components can survive in the resulting state. We show that both entanglement and squeezing can be enhanced in the high-transmissivity and low-squeezing region. In addition, a comparison with symmetrical single-photon subtraction and quantum catalysis shows that the proposed states can achieve a better entanglement enhancement than the photon subtraction in a high-transmissivity region, and a similar property is shared by the catalyzed states in low-transmissivity regions.

Laguerre-polynomial-weighted squeezed vacuum: generation and its properties of entanglement

Wei Ye, Kuizheng Zhang, Haoliang Zhang +2 more

Abstract We theoretically prepare a kind of two-mode entangled non-Gaussian state generated by combining quantum catalysis and parametric-down amplifier operated on the two-mode squeezing vacuum state. We then investigate the entanglement properties by examining Von Neumann entropy, EPR correlation, squeezing effect and the fidelity of teleportation. It is shown that only Von Neumann entropy can be enhanced by both single- and two-mode catalysis in a small squeezing region, while the other properties can be enhanced only by two-mode catalysis including symmetrical and asymmetrical cases. A comparison among these properties shows that the squeezing and the EPR correlation definitely lead to the improvement of both the entanglement and the fidelity, and the region of enhanced fidelity can be seen as a sub-region of the enhanced entanglement which indicates that the entanglement is not always beneficial for the fidelity. In addition, the effect of photon-loss after catalysis on the fidelity is considered and the symmetrical two-photon catalysis may present better behavior than the symmetrical single-photon case against the decoherence in a certain region.

Improved phase sensitivity in a quantum optical interferometer based on multiphoton catalytic two-mode squeezed vacuum states

Huan Zhang, Wei Ye, Chaoping Wei +4 more

The usage of non-Gaussian states to improve the phase sensitivity of interferometers has been studied before. In this paper, we introduce the multiphoton catalysis two-mode squeezed vacuum (MC-TMSV) state as an input of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and study its phase sensitivity with photon-number parity measurement and the influence of photon losses. We also study the statistical properties of the MC-TMSV state in terms of the average photon number, the Wigner function, and the Mandel-$Q$ parameter. Our results show that the MC-TMSV state can exhibit stronger nonclassical characteristics, thereby making the phase sensitivity more precise with either the increase of the photon-catalyzed number or the decrease of the transmissivity. Furthermore, we also consider the effects of photon losses involving external- and internal-loss processes of the MZI, and we find that in both cases the sensitivity with the MC-TMSV state can be significantly better than that with the TMSV state under the same parameters especially in the serious photon losses and small initial squeezing regimes. We also find that the multiphoton catalysis is more sensitive to the external photon losses compared with the internal ones. Our results here can find important applications in quantum metrology.
