A Novel Realization of PSK and QPSK Quantum-Noise Randomized Cipher Systems with Optical Domain Decryption

Yukai Chen, Tao Pu, Jilin Zheng +3 more

Quantum-noise randomized cipher (QNRC) is an anti-interception communication technology, which can realize high-speed encryption for data stream in true randomness. In this paper, the characteristics of the phase shift keying (PSK) and quadrature phase shift keying(QPSK) QNRC systems are verified by the simulation system with digital coherent demodulation. The decryption process of the QNRC coherent system is carried out in the optical domain for the first time. Specifically, at the quadrature coupler, the modulated local light is coupled with the received encrypted optical signal. The multi-symbol phase estimation(MSPE) module is employed to eliminate the influence of the phase deviation on the signal decision. Finally, error-free secure transmission is realized at 2.5Gsymbol/s over 500km optically amplified links. We reveal the new fact that the mesoscopic power of QPSK-QNRC system is higher than that of PSK-QNRC system.

Digital feedforward carrier phase estimation for PSK Y-00 quantum-noise randomized stream cipher

Ken Tanizawa, Fumio Futami, Osamu Hirota

Encryption in fiber-optic transmission is one of remaining issues in modern communication systems. One of the solutions is to use Y-00 quantum-noise randomized stream cipher. In this paper, we propose feedforward carrier phase estimation (CPE) with Y-00 decryption process for digital-coherent detection of phase-shift keying (PSK) Y-00 signal. After decryption of Y-00 signal in a digital domain, carrier phase is estimated by calculating Mth power of signal complex amplitude. Numerical simulations for 10-Gbaud PSK Y-00 signal show that the feedforward CPE with decryption process, which is used by a legitimate receiver who shares keys, successfully tracks phase noise. Consequently, penalty-less demodulation of Y-00 signal is achieved.

IF-Over-Fiber Transmission of OFDM Quantum-Noise Randomized PSK Cipher for Physical Layer Encryption of Wireless Signals

Ken Tanizawa, Fumio Futami

This study proposes an intensity modulation/direct detection intermediate frequency-over-fiber (IFoF) system that generates a microwave orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) quantum-noise randomized phase-shift-keying (PSK) cipher. The system directly prevents wireless interception by an eavesdropper without a private key. We theoretically analyze the system and derive a fundamental tradeoff between the security and signal quality at an intermediate frequency (IF). The system achieves balanced security and signal quality. We experimentally demonstrate 4.09-Gbit/s PSK cipher generation at an IF of 3.6 GHz. The cipher has 216phase levels, and more than 100 adjacent signals are masked by quantum noise. The quantum-noise signal masking imposes irreducible uncertainty on illegitimate reception of the cipher, and a symbol error ratio (SER) that an eavesdropper can reach approaches 1. A lower bound of the SER is promised because truly random signal masking by quantum noise cannot be reduced. The error vector magnitude of the IF signals after decryption is maintained at a low value for wireless transmission. The cipher directly and effectively protects the wireless transmission of personal data from interception.
