Abstract

The fourth-order quantum interference of squeezed fields generated by two independent optical parametric oscillators(OPOs) is discussed based on the semi-classical theory. It is shown that at the oscillation threshold of OPOs the squeezing of two output fields is the highest but the fringe visibility of fourth-order interference is the lowest(33.3%). When the pump power is away from the thres-old, the squeezing decreases while the correlation between them increases.

Semiclassical versus quantum behavior in fourth-order interference

Jeffrey H. Shapiro, Ke-Xun Sun

A theoretical construct is presented for fourth-order interference between the signal and the idler beams of a parametric downconverter. Previous quantum treatments of fourth-order interference have employed correlated single-photon wave packets. The introduced approach, however, relies on Gaussian-state field correlations, which were previously used to characterize quadrature-noise squeezing produced by an optical parametric amplifier and nonclassical twin-beam generation in an optical parametric oscillator. Three principal benefits accrue from the correlation-function formalism. First, the quantum theory of fourth-order interference is unified with that for the other nonclassical effects of χ(2) interactions, i.e., squeezing and twin-beam production. Second, the semiclassical photodetection limit on Gaussian-state fourth-order interference is established; a purely quantum effect can be claimed at fringe visibilities substantially below the 50% level. Finally, both photon-coincidence counting (within the low-photon-flux regime) and intensity interferometry (in the high-photon-flux limit) are easily analyzed within a common framework.

Interference of squeezed light produced by two independent optical parametric oscillators

Junxiang Zhang, Changde Xie, Kunchi Peng

The interference of the squeezed light produced by two independent, identical optical parametric oscillators below threshold is discussed in the context of semiclassical theory. It is shown that interference exists in the usual sense between the output fields from two optical parametric oscillators with coherent injected signals. The degree of squeezing and the intensity and noise fluctuation of the interference field are calculated in detail.

Semiclassical vs. quantum behavior in fourth-order interference

Jeffrey H. Shapiro, Ke-Xun Sun

We explore semiclassical and quantum descriptions of fourth-order interference that are built upon classical and quantum Gaussian-state models for the signal and idler outputs from a parametric down converter. Our approach unifies the analysis of fourth-order interference with those for squeezing and photon twins. It also demonstrates that a purely-quantum fourth-order interference effect can be claimed at fringe visibilities substantially below the commonly accepted threshold of 50%. We start with a pair of models - one quantum and one classical - for the signal and idler fields produced by parametric down conversion.>

Theory of photon statistics and squeezing in quantum interference of a sub-threshold parametric oscillator

Roger Andrews, Edward R. Pike, Sarben Sarkar

A multimode theory describing quantum interference of a subthreshold optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with a coherent local oscillator (LO) in a homodyne detection scheme is presented. Analytic expressions for the count rates in terms of the correlation time and relative phase difference between the LO and OPO have been derived. The spectrum of squeezing is also derived and the threshold for squeezing obtained in terms of the crystal nonlinearity and LO and OPO beam intensities.

Quantum theory of fourth-order interference

Z. Y. Ou

The quantum theory of fourth-order interference of light is presented in a general format and compared with classical wave theory. The conditions under which nonclassical phenomena occur are discussed. In particular, the interference between the quantum field and classical field may give rise to a nonclassical effect. For some special states of light, the interference pattern does not disappear even though one field is much stronger than the other, for which no classical analog exists. Fourth-order effects in the interference between two independent fields are analyzed in detail. It is pointed out that the fourth-order interference between independent fields will not disappear when the integration time of detection is of the order of the reciprocal bandwidth of the two light fields as long as the spectra of the two fields are symmetric around the same center frequency, and for some correlated fields, the interference does not vanish even if the detection time is much larger than the reciprocal bandwidth of the fields. A new type of fourth-order interference experiment involving a beam splitter is proposed in which local realism of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen form is violated for quantum mechanics. This general argument is then applied to the interference between two photons generated in the parametric down-conversion process. The possibility of violations of Bell's inequalities in interference experiments is investigated.
