Slowing down of light pulses using backward-wave four-wave mixing with local response

Konstantin Shcherbin, Grégory Gadret, Hans Rudolf Jauslin +2 more

The slowing down of light pulses is achieved using backward-wave four-wave mixing in a medium with local response. A Bi12TiO20 crystal with an external dc field is used in the experiment as a proof-of-concept material. The delay and shape transformation of output pulses are studied and compared for the transmitted and phase conjugate channels. It is shown that the phase conjugate pulse achieves a longer delay under typical experimental conditions with equal intensities of the pump beams. This advantage of the phase conjugate beam is especially pronounced for short pulses with half-widths smaller than the response time of the medium. The agreement of the experimental results with numerical calculations confirms the validity of the previously developed theoretical model. Analytical solutions are derived for input pulses with triangular shapes.

Nonstationary bistability of the WFC mirror on the basis of four-wave mixing in a resonant medium

V.V. Dritz, V. V. Kabanov, Alexander S. Rubanov

The results are reported of a theoretical analysis of resonatorless optical bistability of the WFC-mirror on the basis of degenerate four-wave mixing in a resonant medium. The conditions set on the fields and parameters of a nonlinear layer leading to an effective nonstationary energy exchange and to the appearance of resonatorless optical bistability are discussed.

Nonperturbative response functions: A tool for the interpretation of four-wave-mixing signals beyond third order

Lipeng Chen, Elisa Palacino‐González, Maxim F. Gelin +1 more

Considering an electronic two-level system coupled to vibrational degrees of freedom and driven by short and intense non-overlapping laser pulses, we introduce the concept of nonperturbative response functions. These response functions are expressed in terms of effective electronic transition dipole moments which depend on the strength of the field-matter coupling and on the pulse durations. It is shown that the nonlinear polarization representing four-wave-mixing signals can elegantly be expressed in terms of these nonperturbative response functions to all orders in the field-matter coupling. The nonperturbative response functions generalize the interpretative power of the familiar third-order response functions to four-wave-mixing experiments with intense laser pulses.
