Nonstationary bistability of the WFC mirror on the basis of four-wave mixing in a resonant medium

Abstract

The results are reported of a theoretical analysis of resonatorless optical bistability of the WFC-mirror on the basis of degenerate four-wave mixing in a resonant medium. The conditions set on the fields and parameters of a nonlinear layer leading to an effective nonstationary energy exchange and to the appearance of resonatorless optical bistability are discussed.

Mean field theory of optical bistability in a phase-conjugate resonator using nearly degenerate four-wave mixing

Kikuo Ujihara

A mean field theory of nearly-degenerate four-wave mixing is developed for the optical bistability, which has recently been found in a phase-conjugate resonator consisting of a normal mirror and a phase-conjugate mirror under relatively strong pumping. The bistability in transmission of the probe beam occurs as the mirror separation or the probe offset frequency is changed, but for a limited range of probe beam intensity. This behavior is explained as occurring under injection-locked conditions because of combined effects of tilting and broadening, or narrowing of the resonance curves due to nonlinearities in the phase-conjugate reflectivity arising from pump depletion.

Theory of Optical Bistability in Collinear Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing

Richard S. Lytel

Optical bistability occurs in many all-optical devices with non-linear couplings and feedback mechanisms. Thus, bistability is predicted for phase conjugate resonators,1 Fabry-Perot interferometers,2 and, generally wave mixing devices with a source of feedback. Bistability is therefore expected in four-wave mixing, where the Maxwell equations provide nonlinear feedback through the nonlinear susceptibility.

Degenerate four-wave interaction in a resonant medium allowing for variation of the pump waves

Alexander A. Betin, A. I. Dyatlov, S. N. Kulagina +2 more

A theoretical analysis is made of the efficiency of wavefront reversal under conditions of a degenerate form of the four-wave interaction in a resonantly absorbing (amplifying) medium allowing for changes in the pump waves as a result of their natural resonant absorption (amplification). The coefficient of reflection into a reversed wave is obtained as a function of the optical thickness of a layer of the medium, the boundary values of the pump wave intensity, and the shift of the field frequency from the line center. The optimal values of these parameters and the corresponding maximum reflection coefficient are determined.

Parametric oscillation in four-wave mixing with nondegenerate pumping

Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan, K. G. Petrosyan, Karen V. Kheruntsyan

A theoretical investigation is made of parametric generation of light by four-wave mixing in an optical cavity with two pump fields of different frequencies. Mixing configurations resulting in the excitation of one and three cavity modes are considered taking into account the effects of phase modulation and of depletion of the pump fields. An analysis is made of stable steady-state oscillation regimes. Calculations are reported of the intensities of the generated radiation modes at the exit from the cavity above the threshold. An analysis is made of the conditions for the appearance of optical bistability at nonzero values of the cavity detuning.

Theoretical analysis of nonconventional schemes of four-wave mixing (FWM) using additional irradiation of resonance medium, which enables the realization of noncoherent optical control of the process efficiency, has been carried out. The possibility of significant increase in the phase conjugate reflectivity and decrease in the pump wave intensity, required for realization of optical bistability, has been shown. Hysteresis and optical bistability in degenerate four-wave mixing

Herbert G. Winful, John H. Marburger

The intensity-dependent refractive index leads to hysteresis and optical bistability in degenerate four-wave mixing processes (DFWM). Bistability may be observed in the phase conjugate signal or in the ’’spontaneous’’ oscillation possible in DFWM. This bistability does not require external resonant cavities.
