Electromagnetic Waves in Amplifying Media

Vladimir Mitin, Dmitry I. Sementsov

The analysis of the phenomenon of refraction of electromagnetic waves at the interface between two media suggests that their velocity when passing from one medium to another changes. This chapter describes the basic principles of amplification and discusses the main features of wave propagation in amplifying media. Amplification occurs due to the induced coherent emission by excited atoms under the influence of the field of the electromagnetic wave. The chapter illustrates the attenuation of waves in an absorbing medium by using the Bouguer’s law. Bouguer’s law holds for a wide range of electromagnetic radiation—from radio waves to X-rays and gamma rays. The chapter discusses the main features of the different types of lasers such as solid-state lasers, gas lasers, dye lasers, and semiconductor lasers. It also includes some exercise problems related to the propagation of electromagnetic waves in amplifying media.

Efficiency of ring systems for phase self-conjugation of radiation by four-wave interaction in media with thermal nonlinearity

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, Mark V. Zolotarev, A. A. Stepanov +1 more

A theoretical analysis is made of the efficiency of typical ring systems of phase-conjugating mirrors utilizing a degenerate four-wave interaction in media with a thermal nonlinearity. The analysis is made for steady-state conditions taking into account wave saturation effects in an amplifier situated in a positive feedback circuit. It is shown that the reflection coefficient in these systems is extremely sensitive to the level of the phase-conjugate signal (as the ratio of the signal intensity to the saturation intensity of the amplifier active medium is increased, the reflection coefficient of the ring phase-conjugating mirror decreases sharply). It is also found that at a high level of the nonlinearity and for an appreciable gain per pass, these systems exhibit multistability (i.e., several different steady states exist).
