Abstract

Internal global symmetries exist for the free non-relativistic Schr\"{o}dinger particle, whose associated Noether charges--the space integrals of the wavefunction and the wavefunction multiplied by the spatial coordinate--are exhibited. Analogous symmetries in classical electromagnetism are also demonstrated.

A Pedestrian Introduction to the Mathematical Concepts of Quantum Physics

These notes offer a basic introduction to the primary mathematical concepts of quantum physics, and their physical significance, from the operator and Hilbert space point of view, highlighting more what are essentially the abstract algebraic aspects of quantisation in contrast to more standard treatments of such issues, while also bridging towards the path integral formulation of quantisation. A discussion of the (first) Noether theorem and Lie symmetries is also included to complement the presentation. Emphasis is put throughout, as illustrative examples threading the presentation, on the quantum harmonic oscillator and the dynamics of a charged particle coupled to the electromagnetic field, with the ambition to bring the reader onto the threshold of relativistic quantum field theories with their local gauge invariances as a natural framework for describing relativistic quantum particles in interaction and carrying specific conserved charges.

Nontrivially realized simple symmetries of a simple system

Using the example of a particle moving in infinite space under the influence of a constant in space but possibly time dependent force we discuss the application of the Noether theorem and its implications for the classical and quantum versions of the theory of such a system.

Classical-Quantum Correspondence by Means of Probability Densities

Within the frame of the recently introduced phase space representation of non relativistic quantum mechanics, we propose a Lagrangian from which the phase space Schrodinger equation can be derived. From that Lagrangian, the associated conservation equations, according to Noether's theorem, are obtained. This shows that one can analyze quantum systems completely in phase space as it is done in coordinate space, without additional complications.

We present an old and regretfully forgotten method by Jacobi which allows one to find many Lagrangians of simple classical models and also of nonconservative systems. We underline that the knowledge of Lie symmetries generates Jacobi last multipliers and each of the latter yields a Lagrangian. Then it is shown that Noether's theorem can identify among those Lagrangians the physical Lagrangian(s) that will successfully lead to quantization. The preservation of the Noether symmetries as Lie symmetries of the corresponding Schrödinger equation is the key that takes classical mechanics into quantum mechanics. Some examples are presented.
