Abstract

A fermionic functional renormalization group (FRG) is applied to describe the super-fluid phase transition of the two-component fermionic system with attractive contact interaction. The connection between the fermionic FRG approach and the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory with Gorkov and Melik-Barkhudarov (GMB) correction are clarified in detail in the weak coupling region by using the renormalization group flow of the fermionic four-point vertex with particle-particle and particle-hole scat-tering contributions. To go beyond the BCS+GMB theory, coupled FRG flow equations of the fermion self-energy and the four-point vertex are studied under an Ansatz con-cerning their frequency/momentum dependence. We found that the fermion self-energy turns out to be substantial even in the weak couping region, and the frequency depen-dence of the four-point vertex is essential to obtain the correct asymptotic-ultraviolet behavior of the flow for the self-energy. The superfluid transition temperature and the associated chemical potential are calculated in the region of negative scattering lengths. Subject Index A40, A63, B32, I22

Fermionic functional renormalization group with multiple regulators and the BCS-BEC crossover

Yuya Tanizaki

New formulation of fermionic functional renormalization group (f-FRG) with multiple regulators is proposed. It is applied to a two-component fermionic system with an attractive contact interaction in order to study the whole region of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer to Bose-Einstein condensation crossover. Combining a conventional formalism of FRG with a two-point infrared (IR) regulator and a new formalism with an IR regulator inside the four-fermion vertex, we control both one-particle fermion excitations and collective bosonic excitations. This justifies a simple approximation on the f-FRG method, so that the connection of the f-FRG formalism to the Nozi\`eres-Schmitt-Rink (NSR) theory is made clear. Aspects of f-FRG to go beyond the NSR theory are also discussed.

Flow equation of functional renormalization group for three-body scattering problems

Yuya Tanizaki

Functional renormalization group (FRG) is applied to the three-body scattering prob-lem in the two-component fermionic system with an attractive contact interaction. We establish an exact flow equation on the basis of FRG and show that our flow equation is consistent with integral equations obtained from the Dyson-Schwinger equation. In particular, the relation of our flow equation and the Skornyakov and Ter-Martirosyan equation for the atom-dimer scattering is made clear. Subject Index A12,B32,D05

Renormalization Group Approach to Superfluid Neutron Matter

K. Hebeler

In the present thesis superfluid many-fermion systems are investigated in the framework of the Renormalization Group (RG). Starting from an experimentally determined two-body interaction this scheme provides a microscopic approach to strongly correlated many-body systems at low temperatures. The fundamental objects under investigation are the two-point and the four-point vertex functions. We show that explicit results for simple separable interactions on BCS-level can be reproduced in the RG framework to high accuracy. Furthermore the RG approach can immediately be applied to general realistic interaction models. In particular, we show how the complexity of the many-body problem can be reduced systematically by combining different RG schemes. Apart from technical convenience the RG framework has conceptual advantage that correlations beyond the BCS level can be incorporated in the flow equations in a systematic way. In this case however the flow equations are no more explicit equations like at BCS level but instead a coupled set of implicit equations. We show on the basis of explicit calculations for the single-channel case the efficacy of an iterative approach to this system. The generalization of this strategy provides a promising strategy for a non-perturbative treatment of the coupled channel problem. By the coupling of the flow equations of the two-point and four-point vertex self-consistency on the one-body level is guaranteed at every cutoff scale.
