Physical Interpretation of Laser-Induced Suppression of Quantum Tunneling

Abstract

We revisit the problem of laser-induced suppression of quantum dynamical tunneling in a model system studied by Kilin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76 (1996) 3297]. This quantum system consists of a ground state symmetric double-well potential which is coupled by a strong laser field to an excited state asymmetric double-well potential. By analyzing the assumptions used in their analysis we show that the suppression of quantum dynamical tunneling can be explained with the use of dark and bright states of the system. We also generalize the system and the conditions for suppression of quantum tunneling and show that, in certain cases, suppression can occur regardless the characteristics of the excited potential surface.

The suppression of Quantum Dynamical tunneling is predicted to occur when a laser field drives a transition in an isolated, single molecule embedded in a host medium.A externalforce having quasiresont frequency drives trasitions between the ground and excited states, which forms a Λ-type systerm.Through dressed state analysis, dark and bright representation analysis and some approximation, the solution is gained.Dark and bright representation analysis is a physical interpretation;in some condition, particles can be completely localized in one well or be localized in lower doublet.

Complete population transfer between nonresonant tunneling states induced by a train of laser pulses

Noriaki Tsukada, Y. Nomura, Toshiro Isu

Complete population transfer between nonresonant tunneling states in a double-well system is predicted to occur when a train of bright or dark laser pulses drives transitions to an excited state in the system. The transition induces the phase shift of the wave packet involved in the transition and alters successive evolutions of the wave packets of the nonresonant states as a result of quantum interference, resulting in complete tunneling.

Suppression or enhancement of quantum tunneling by a nonlinear resonance induced in a driven double-well system

Ju-Yong Shin

The effect of a periodic driving force on coherent tunneling of a driven double square-well system, especially when its central potential barrier is very tall and very thin, is investigated. The suppression or enhancement of the tunneling of a wave packet properly chosen in the double-well system may be achieved by a judicious choice of the period of a driving force, i.e., by a particular choice of the generating condition of a nonlinear resonance exhibiting a desirable property. We analyze this mechanism by exploiting both the properties of a dynamical symmetry of the Hamiltonian and the localized properties of Floquet states induced by the nonlinear resonance. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Quantum tunneling and its absence in deep wells and strong magnetic fields

Charles Fefferman, Jacob Shapiro, Michael I. Weinstein

We present results on quantum tunneling between deep potential wells, in the presence of a strong constant magnetic field. We construct a family of double-well potentials containing examples for which the low-energy eigenvalue splitting vanishes, and hence quantum tunneling is eliminated. Further, by deforming within this family, the magnetic ground state can be made to transition from symmetric to antisymmetric. However, for typical double wells in a certain regime, tunneling is not suppressed, and we provide a lower bound for the eigenvalue splitting.

Double-Well Quantum Tunneling Visualized via Wigner's Function

Dimitris Kakofengitis, Ole Steuernagel

We investigate quantum tunneling in smooth symmetric and asymmetric double-well potentials. Exact solutions for the ground and first excited states are used to study the dynamics. We introduce Wigner's quasi-probability distribution function to highlight and visualize the non-classical nature of spatial correlations arising in tunneling.

Quenching of tunneling and role of phase coherent in a double-well using laser fields

Cheng Yan-chun

Some aspects of quantum tunneling of a particle in a double-well driven by an external field are studied within the two level approximations. The localization problems of particles are studied when the system are driven by far off-resonance and/or strong laser fields. A nonperturbative expression of the time evolution of system regardless of the coupling strength value is obtained, in the strong field regime, because of the asymptotic behavior of the Bessel function, the conclusion remain valid even when the far off-resonance condition is not fulfilled. That, when the zeros Bessel function vanishes, coherent destruction of tunneling will occur.Instead of discuss the two limitations one by one, simple expression with profound meaning is given.
