Dynamic Matrix Ansatz for Integrable Reaction-Diffusion Processes

Abstract

We show that the stochastic dynamics of a large class of one-dimensional interacting particle systems may be presented by integrable quantum spin Hamiltonians. Generalizing earlier work [1, 2] we present an alternative description of these processes in terms of a time-dependent operator algebra with quadratic relations. These relations generate the Bethe ansatz equations for the spectrum and turn the calculation of time-dependent expectation values into the problem of either finding representations of this algebra or of solving functional equations for the initial values of the operators. We use both strategies for the study of two specific models: (i) We construct a two-dimensional time-dependent representation of the algebra for the symmetric exclusion process with open boundary conditions. In this way we obtain new results on the dynamics of this system and on the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the corresponding quantum spin chain, which is the isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet with non-diagonal, symmetry-breaking boundary fields. (ii) We consider the non-equilibrium spin relaxation of Ising spins with zero-temperature Glauber dynamics and an additional coupling to an infinite-temperature heat bath

Stochastic Reaction-Diffusion Processes, Operator Algebras and Integrable Quantum Spin Chains

Gunter Markus Schutz

We show that the stochastic dynamics of a large class of one-dimensional interacting particle systems may be presented by integrable quantum spin Hamiltonians. Using the Bethe ansatz and similarity transformations this yields new exact results. In a complementary approach we generalize previous work and present a new description of these and other processes and the related quantum chains in terms of an operator algebra with quadratic relations. The full solution of the master equation of the process is thus turned into the problem of finding representations of this algebra. We find a two-dimensional time-dependent representation of the algebra for the symmetric exclusion process with open boundary conditions. We obtain new results on the dynamics of this system and on the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the corresponding quantum spin chain, which is the isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet with non-diagonal boundary fields.

Application of Operator Algebras to Stochastic Dynamics and the Heisenberg Chain

Robin B. Stinchcombe, Gunter Markus Schutz

Algebraic manipulations are used to reduce a new description of stochastic dynamics and quantum spin chains involving two nonlocal operators $C,D$. For the symmetric hopping of hard-core particles, and its associated Heisenberg chain, the operator algebra may be written in the reduced form $2\stackrel{\ifmmode \dot{}\else \.{}\fi{}}{D}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}[[C,D]{,C}^{\ensuremath{-}1}]$, ${2D}^{2}{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}CDC}^{\ensuremath{-}1}{D+DC}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\mathrm{DC}$. These equations are shown to describe diffusive dynamics and phase change on interchange, respectively, and to lead to Bethe ansatz equations for the spectrum of the isotropic Heisenberg chain with symmetry-breaking boundary fields. This yields new exact results for the dynamics of boundary-driven systems.

A sufficient criterion for integrability of stochastic many-body dynamics and quantum spin chains

Vladislav Popkov, M. Ebrahim Fouladvand, Gunter Markus Schutz

We propose a dynamical matrix product ansatz describing the stochastic dynamics of two species of particles with excluded-volume interaction and the quantum mechanics of the associated quantum spin chains, respectively. The time-dependent algebra which is obtained from the action of the Markov generator of the exclusion process (or quantum Hamiltonian of the spin chain, respectively) is given in terms of a set of quadratic relations. By analysing the permutation consistency of the induced cubic relations, we obtain sufficient conditions on the hopping rates (i.e. the quantum mechanical interaction constants) which allow us to identify integrable models. From the dynamical algebra we construct the quadratic algebra of Zamolodchikov type, the associativity of which is a Yang–Baxter equation. We also obtain directly from the dynamical matrix product ansatz the Bethe ansatz equations for the spectra of these models.

Reaction-diffusion processes and their connection with integrable quantum spin chains

Malte Henkel

This is a pedagogical account on reaction-diffusion systems and their relationship with integrable quantum spin chains. Reaction-diffusion systems are paradigmatic examples of non-equilibrium systems. Their long-time behaviour is strongly influenced through fluctuation effects in low dimensions which renders the habitual mean-field cinetic equations inapplicable. Starting from the master equation rewritten as a Schrödinger equation with imaginary time, the associated quantum hamiltonian of certain one-dimensional reaction-diffusion models is closely related to integrable magnetic chains. The relationship with the Hecke algebra and its quotients allows to identify integrable reaction-diffusion models and, through the Baxterization procedure, relate them to the solutions of Yang-Baxter equations which can be solved via the Bethe ansatz. Methods such as spectral and partial integrability, free fermions, similarity transformations or diffusion algebras are reviewed, with several concrete examples treated explicitly. An outlook on how the recently-introduced concept of local scale invariance might become useful in the description of non-equilibrium ageing phenomena is presented, with particular emphasis on the kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics.

Representations of the quadratic algebra and partially asymmetric diffusion with open boundaries

Fabian H. L. Eßler, V. Rittenberg

We consider the one-dimensional partially asymmetric exclusion model with open boundaries. The model describes a system of hard-core particles that hop stochastically in both directions with different rates. At both boundaries particles are injected and extracted. By means of the method of Derrida et al the stationary probability measure can be expressed as a matrix-product state involving two matrices forming a Fock-like representation of a general quadratic algebra. We obtain the representations of this algebra, which were unknown in the mathematical literature and use the two-dimensional one to derive exact expressions for the density profile and correlation functions. Using the correspondence between the stochastic model and a quantum spin chain, we obtain exact correlation functions for a spin- Heisenberg XXZ chain with non-diagonal boundary terms. Generalizations to other reaction - diffusion models are discussed.
