Abstract

We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the two-dimensional square-kagome lattice with almost dispersionless lowest magnon band. For a general exchange coupling geometry we elaborate low-energy effective Hamiltonians which emerge at high magnetic fields. The effective model to describe the low-energy degrees of freedom of the initial frustrated quantum spin model is the (unfrustrated) square-lattice spin-1/2 XXZ model in a z-aligned magnetic field. For the effective model we perform quantum Monte Carlo simulations to discuss the low-temperature properties of the square-kagome quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet at high magnetic fields. We pay special attention to a magnetic-field driven Berezinskii–Kosterlitz– Thouless phase transition which occurs at low temperatures.

Frustrated quantum Heisenberg double-tetrahedral and octahedral chains at high magnetic fields

Olesia Krupnitska

We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on two one-dimensional frustrated lattices, a double-tetrahedral chain and an octahedral chain, with almost dispersionless (flat) lowest magnon band in a strong magnetic field. Using the localized-magnon picture, we construct an effective description of the one-dimensional chains with triangle and square traps within the strong-coupling approximation. We perform extensive exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group calculations to check the validity of the obtained effective Hamiltonians by comparison with the initial models with special focus on the magnetization and specific heat at high magnetic fields.

Quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a field on the Tasaki square lattice

Maksym Parymuda, Taras Krokhmalskii, Oleg Derzhko

Abstract We consider the S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Tasaki square lattice (flat-band spin system) and study its low-temperature thermodynamics around the saturation magnetic field. To this end, we construct a mapping of the ground states in the subspaces with total S z = N /2, …, N /3 ( N is the number of lattice sites) on the hard squares on an auxiliary square lattice and use classical Monte Carlo simulations to examine the latter classical system. The most prominent feature of the S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Tasaki square lattice under consideration is an order-disorder phase transition which occurs at a low temperature just below the saturation magnetic field and belongs to the 2D Ising universality class.

Frustrated honeycomb-lattice bilayer quantum antiferromagnet in a magnetic field: Unconventional phase transitions in a two-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model

Taras Krokhmalskii, Vasyl Baliha, Oleg Derzhko +2 more

We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a bilayer honeycomb lattice including interlayer frustration in the presence of an external magnetic field. In the vicinity of the saturation field, we map the low-energy states of this quantum system onto the spatial configurations of hard hexagons on a honeycomb lattice. As a result, we can construct effective classical models (lattice-gas as well as Ising models) on the honeycomb lattice to calculate the properties of the frustrated quantum Heisenberg spin system in the low-temperature regime. We perform classical Monte Carlo simulations for a hard-hexagon model and adopt known results for an Ising model to discuss the finite-temperature order-disorder phase transition that is driven by a magnetic field at low temperatures. We also discuss an effective-model description around the ideal frustration case and find indications for a spin-flop-like transition in the considered isotropic spin model.

Ising-type critical exponents of the fully frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg FM/AF square bilayer at a critical magnetic field

Katarína Karľová, Jozef Strečka

The fully frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg FM/AF square bilayer in a magnetic field with the ferromagnetic inter-dimer interaction and the antiferromagnetic intra-dimer interaction is explored by the use of localized many-magnon approach, which allows to connect the original purely quantum Heisenberg spin model on a square bilayer with the effective ferromagnetic Ising model on a simple square lattice. Magnetization and specific heat are investigated exactly at a field-driven phase transition from the singlet-dimer phase towards the fully saturated ferromagnetic phase, which changes from a discontinuous phase transition to a continuous one at a certain critical temperature. The mapping correspondence between the spin-1/2 Heisenberg FM/AF square bilayer and the ferromagnetic Ising square lattice suggests for this special critical point of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg FM/AF square bilayer critical exponents from the standard two-dimensional Ising universality class.

Thermodynamics of two-dimensional XXZ easy-plane quantum Heisenberg magnets

Luca Capriotti, Alessandro Cuccoli, V. Tognetti +2 more

We consider the quantum easy-plane (XXZ) magnet on the square lattice. In the classical case the system exhibits the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless transition. Simulations, both for ferro- and antiferromagnets, using the method of the effective classical Hamiltonian, are made for different spin values and refer to the specific heat, the static spin correlation functions and correlation lengths in a broad range of temperatures, below and above the transition. The effects of quantum fluctuations are quantitatively evaluated and discussed.
