Superconductivity of strongly correlated electrons on the honeycomb lattice

Abstract

A microscopic theory of the electronic spectrum and of superconductivity within the t-J model on the honeycomb lattice is developed. We derive the equations for the normal and anomalous Green functions in terms of the Hubbard operators by applying the projection technique. Superconducting pairing of d + id-type mediated by the antiferromagnetic exchange is found. The superconducting T-c as a function of hole doping exhibits a two-peak structure related to the van Hove singularities of the density of states for the two-band t-J model. At half-filling and for large enough values of the exchange coupling, gapless superconductivity may occur. For small doping the coexistence of antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity is suggested. It is shown that the s-wave pairing is prohibited, since it violates the constraint of no-double-occupancy.

Electron spectrum and superconductivity in the t−J model at moderate doping

Nikolay M. Plakida, V. S. Oudovenko

A microscopical theory of electron spectrum and superconductivity within the two-dimensional $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model in paramagnetic state is proposed. By employing the projection technique for the Green functions in terms of the Hubbard operators self-consistent Eliashberg equations are derived. A strong coupling of electrons with spin and charge fluctuations due to exchange and kinematical interactions is obtained. In the normal state, one-electron spectral functions reveal narrow quasiparticle peaks close to the Fermi surface (FS) with an additional broad incoherent band. The FS changes from holelike at low doping to electronlike for hole concentrations $\ensuremath{\delta}>0.3.$ In the superconducting state we observe d-wave pairing with the maximal ${T}_{c}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.04t$ at optimal doping $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.3.$

Strongly correlated electrons on the honeycombb lattice: magnetism and superconductivity

F. G. Ribeiro

In view of quite recent experimental activities on magnetic and superconducting properties of honeycomb and hexagonal lattice based materials, in this thesis we have used field-theoretic and many-body methods to investigate magnetic and superconducting properties of the large-U Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling and in the hole-doped regime. Within the framework of a functional-integral approach, we obtain the Lagrangian density associated with the charge (Grassmann fields) and spin [SU(2) gauge fields] degrees of freedom. The Hamiltonian related to the charge degrees of freedom is exactly diagonalized. In the strong-coupling regime, we derive a perturbative low-energy theory suitable to describe the (quantum) magnetic and superconducting phases at half-filling and in the hole-doped regime. At half-filling, we deal with the underlying spin degrees of freedom of the quantum antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg model by employing a second-order spin-wave analysis, in which case we have calculated the ground-state energy and the staggered magnetization; the results are in very good agreement with previous studies. Further, in the continuum, we derive a nonlinear σ-model with a topological Hopf term that describes the AF-VBS (valence bond solid) competition. In the challenging hole-doped regime, our approach allows the derivation of a t-J Hamiltonian, and the analysis of the role played by charge and spin quantum fluctuations on the ground-state energy and, particularly, on the breakdown of the AF order at a critical hole doping; the results are benchmarked against recent Grassmann tensor product state simulations. In addition, we have performed an extensive study of the electronic structure of the doped system for each competing phase: AF, ferromagnetic (FM), and (spin-singlet pairing) s-, dx₂₋ʏ₂ – and idxʏ -wave superconducting (SC) state induced by purely electronic effects. In this context, an energetic analysis of the ground state of these phases reveal that the AF order prevails for low hole doping, while a dominantly chiral dx₂₋ʏ₂ + idxʏ superconducting state was found in the vicinity of the Van Hove singularity (high hole doping). We also stress that a thermodynamic analysis of the superconducting phase shows that the critical temperature is directly related to the exchange constant J = 4t²/U, in which t denotes the hopping amplitude and U the on-site Coulomb repulsion of the Hubbard model (purely electronic origin). Remarkably, the competition between the AF and dx₂₋ʏ₂ + idxʏ SC phases takes place by the occurrence of a first-order transition accompanied by a spatial phase separation of the referred phases.

Superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

J. Beenen, David M. Edwards

Quasiparticle bands of the two-dimensional Hubbard model are calculated using the Roth two-pole approximation to the one-particle Green's function. Excellent agreement is obtained with recent Monte Carlo calculations, including an anomalous volume of the Fermi surface near half-filling, which can possibly be explained in terms of a breakdown of Fermi liquid theory. The calculated bands are very flat around the (\ensuremath{\pi},0) points of the Brillouin zone in agreement with photoemission measurements of cuprate superconductors. With doping there is a shift in spectral weight from the upper band to the lower band. The Roth method is extended to deal with superconductivity within a four-pole approximation allowing electron-hole mixing. It is shown that triplet p-wave pairing never occurs. A self-consistent solution with singlet ${\mathit{d}}_{{\mathit{x}}^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathit{y}}^{2}}$-wave pairing is found and optimal doping occurs when the van Hove singularity, corresponding to the flat band part, lies at the Fermi level. Nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic correlations play an important role in flattening the bands near the Fermi level and in favoring superconductivity. However, the mechanism for superconductivity is a local one, in contrast to spin-fluctuation exchange models. For reasonable values of the hopping parameter the transition temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ is in the range 10--100 K. The optimum doping ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\delta}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ lies between 0.14 and 0.25, depending on the ratio U/t. The gap equation has a BCS-like form and 2${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{\mathrm{max}}$/${\mathit{kT}}_{\mathit{c}}$\ensuremath{\simeq}4.

On the theory of superconductivity in the extended Hubbard model: Spin-fluctuation pairing

Nikolay M. Plakida, V. S. Oudovenko

A microscopic theory of superconductivity in the extended Hubbard model which takes into account the intersite Coulomb repulsion and electron-phonon interaction is developed in the limit of strong correlations. The Dyson equation for normal and pair Green functions expressed in terms of the Hubbard operators is derived. The self-energy is obtained in the noncrossing approximation. In the normal state, antiferromagnetic short-range correlations result in the electronic spectrum with a narrow bandwidth. We calculate superconducting Tc by taking into account the pairing mediated by charge and spin fluctuations and phonons. We found the d-wave pairing with high-Tc mediated by spin fluctuations induced by the strong kinematic interaction for the Hubbard operators. Contributions to the d-wave pairing coming from the intersite Coulomb repulsion and phonons turned out to be small.
