A limit of the quantum Renyi divergence

Abstract

Recently, an interesting quantity called the quantum Renyi divergence (or "sandwiched" Renyi relative entropy) was defined for pairs of positive semi-definite operators $\rho$ and $\sigma$. It depends on a parameter $\alpha$ and acts as a parent quantity for other relative entropies which have important operational significances in quantum information theory: the quantum relative entropy and the min- and max-relative entropies. There is, however, another relative entropy, called the 0-relative Renyi entropy, which plays a key role in the analysis of various quantum information-processing tasks in the one-shot setting. We prove that the 0-relative Renyi entropy is obtainable from the quantum Renyi divergence only if $\rho$ and $\sigma$ have equal supports. This, along with existing results in the literature, suggests that it suffices to consider two essential parent quantities from which operationally relevant entropic quantities can be derived - the quantum Renyi divergence with parameter $\alpha \ge 1/2$, and the $\alpha$-relative R\'enyi entropy with $\alpha\in [0,1)$.

A limit of the quantum Rényi divergence

Recently, an interesting quantity called the quantum Rényi divergence (or 'sandwiched' Rényi relative entropy) was defined for pairs of positive semi-definite operators ρ and σ. It depends on a parameter α and acts as a parent quantity for other relative entropies which have important operational significance in quantum information theory: the quantum relative entropy and the min- and max-relative entropies. We prove that the 0-relative Rényi entropy is obtainable from the quantum Rényi divergence only if ρ and σ have equal supports. This, along with existing results in the literature, suggests that it suffices to consider two essential parent quantities from which operationally relevant entropic quantities can be derived—the quantum Rényi divergence with parameter α ⩾ 1/2, and the α-relative Rényi entropy with α ∈ [0, 1).

α - z -Rényi relative entropies

Koenraad M. R. Audenaert, Nilanjana Datta

We consider a two-parameter family of Rényi relative entropies Dα,z(ρ ∥ σ) that are quantum generalisations of the classical Rényi divergence Dα(p ∥ q). This family includes many known relative entropies (or divergences) such as the quantum relative entropy, the recently defined quantum Rényi divergences, as well as the quantum Rényi relative entropies. All its members satisfy the quantum generalizations of Rényi’s axioms for a divergence. We consider the range of the parameters α, z for which the data-processing inequality holds. We also investigate a variety of limiting cases for the two parameters, obtaining explicit formulas for each one of them.

Transformations on density operators and on positive definite operators preserving the quantum Rényi divergence

Gaál Marcell Gábor, Lajos Molnár

In a certain sense we generalize the recently introduced and extensively studied notion called quantum Rényi divergence (also called ”sandwiched Rényi relative entropy”) and describe the structures of corresponding symmetries. More precisely, we characterize all transformations on the set of density operators which leave our new general quantity invariant and also determine the structure of all bijective transformations on the cone of positive definite operators which preserve the quantum Rényi divergence.

Relative entropies and their use in quantum information theory

Felix Leditzky

This dissertation investigates relative entropies, also called generalized divergences, and how they can be used to characterize information-theoretic tasks in quantum information theory. The main goal is to further refine characterizations of the optimal rates for quantum source coding, state redistribution, and measurement compression with quantum side information via second order asymptotic expansions and strong converse theorems. The dissertation consists of a mathematical and an information-theoretic part. In the mathematical part, we focus on the $α$-sandwiched Rényi divergence ($α$-SRD). We first investigate the limit $α\to 0$ to determine whether this recovers the well-known $0$-Rényi relative divergence. We then prove various new results for entropic quantities derived from the $α$-SRD, including dimension bounds and useful bounds in terms of the fidelity between two quantum states. Furthermore, we derive a necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for equality in the data processing inequality (viz. monotonicity under quantum operations) for the $α$-SRD, and give applications to entropic bounds. In the information-theoretic part, we first derive the second order asymptotics of visible quantum source coding using a mixed source. For the achievability part, we develop universal quantum source codes achieving a given second order rate for a memoryless source. As a corollary of the main result, we obtain the second order asymptotics of quantum source coding using a single memoryless source. We then prove strong converse theorems for state redistribution (with or without feedback) and measurement compression with quantum side information. The key ingredients in proving these theorems are the aforementioned fidelity bounds on Rényi entropic quantities derived from the $α$-SRD.

Rényi divergence inequalities via interpolation, with applications to generalised entropic uncertainty relations

Alexander Clyde McKinlay

We investigate quantum Rényi entropic quantities, specifically those derived from 'sandwiched' divergence. This divergence is one of several proposed Rényi generalisations of the quantum relative entropy. We may define Rényi generalisations of the quantum conditional entropy and mutual information in terms of this divergence, from which they inherit many desirable properties. However, these quantities lack some of the convenient structure of their Shannon and von Neumann counterparts. We attempt to bridge this gap by establishing divergence inequalities for valid combinations of Rényi order which replicate the chain and decomposition rules of Shannon and von Neumann entropies. Although weaker in general, these inequalities recover equivalence when the Rényi parameters tend to one. To this end we present Rényi mutual information decomposition rules, a new approach to the Rényi conditional entropy tripartite chain rules and a more general bipartite comparison. The derivation of these results relies on a novel complex interpolation approach for general spaces of linear operators. These new comparisons allow us to employ techniques that until now were only available for Shannon and von Neumann entropies. We can therefore directly apply them to the derivation of Rényi entropic uncertainty relations. Accordingly, we establish a family of Rényi information exclusion relations and provide further generalisations and improvements to this and other known relations, including the Rényi bipartite uncertainty relations.

Optimized Quantum F-Divergences

Mark M. Wilde

The quantum relative entropy is a measure of the distinguishability of two quantum states, and it is a unifying concept in quantum information theory: many information measures such as entropy, conditional entropy, mutual information, and entanglement measures can be realized from it. As such, there has been broad interest in generalizing the notion to further understand its most basic properties, one of which is the data processing inequality. The quantum f-divergence of Petz is one generalization of the quantum relative entropy, and it also leads to other relative entropies, such as the Petz-Renyi relative entropies. In this contribution, I introduce the optimized quantum f-divergence as a related generalization of quantum relative entropy. I prove that it satisfies the data processing inequality, and the method of proof relies upon the operator Jensen inequality, similar to Petz's original approach. Interestingly, the sandwiched Renyi relative entropies are particular examples of the optimized f-divergence. Thus, one benefit of this approach is that there is now a single, unified approach for establishing the data processing inequality for both the Petz-Renyi and sandwiched Renyi relative entropies, for the full range of parameters for which it is known to hold.
