Relative entropies play important roles in classical and quantum information theory. In this paper, we discuss the sandwiched Rényi relative entropy for [Formula: see text] on [Formula: see text] (the cone of positive trace-class operators acting on an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space [Formula: see text]) and characterize all surjective maps preserving the sandwiched Rényi relative entropy on [Formula: see text]. Such transformations have the form [Formula: see text] for each [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] is either a unitary or an anti-unitary operator on [Formula: see text]. Particularly, all surjective maps preserving sandwiched Rényi relative entropy on [Formula: see text] (the set of all quantum states on [Formula: see text]) are necessarily implemented by either a unitary or an anti-unitary operator.
Recently, an interesting quantity called the quantum Renyi divergence (or "sandwiched" Renyi relative entropy) was defined for pairs of positive semi-definite operators
ρ and
σ. It depends on a parameter
α and acts as a parent quantity for other relative entropies which have important operational significances in quantum information theory: the quantum relative entropy and the min- and max-relative entropies. There is, however, another relative entropy, called the 0-relative Renyi entropy, which plays a key role in the analysis of various quantum information-processing tasks in the one-shot setting. We prove that the 0-relative Renyi entropy is obtainable from the quantum Renyi divergence only if
ρ and
σ have equal supports. This, along with existing results in the literature, suggests that it suffices to consider two essential parent quantities from which operationally relevant entropic quantities can be derived - the quantum Renyi divergence with parameter
α≥1/2, and the
α-relative R\'enyi entropy with
α∈[0,1).
Recently, an interesting quantity called the quantum Rényi divergence (or 'sandwiched' Rényi relative entropy) was defined for pairs of positive semi-definite operators ρ and σ. It depends on a parameter α and acts as a parent quantity for other relative entropies which have important operational significance in quantum information theory: the quantum relative entropy and the min- and max-relative entropies. We prove that the 0-relative Rényi entropy is obtainable from the quantum Rényi divergence only if ρ and σ have equal supports. This, along with existing results in the literature, suggests that it suffices to consider two essential parent quantities from which operationally relevant entropic quantities can be derived—the quantum Rényi divergence with parameter α ⩾ 1/2, and the α-relative Rényi entropy with α ∈ [0, 1).
Quantum relative entropies play a fundamental role in quantum information theory. In the classical setting, Rényi relative entropies constitute, up to linear combinations, the most general class of relative entropies, naturally motivating the search for their minimal and maximal quantum extensions. The minimal extension is known to be the reverse sandwiched Rényi relative entropy for
α∈[0,1/2) and the sandwiched Rényi relative entropy for
α≥1/2. In contrast, the maximal extension had previously been identified only for
α∈[0,2], where it is given by the geometric Rényi relative entropy. In this work, we complete this characterization by proving that for
α>2, the maximal extension is given by the
α-
z Rényi relative entropy with
z=α−1. As an application, we determine when an energy-incoherent state can be transformed into an energy-coherent state by a Gibbs-preserving operation assisted by an uncorrelated catalyst, thereby fully characterizing the coherence-generating power of this class of operations in the catalytic setting.
Abstract The sandwiched Rényi divergences of two finite-dimensional density operators quantify their asymptotic distinguishability in the strong converse domain. This establishes the sandwiched Rényi divergences as the operationally relevant ones among the infinitely many quantum extensions of the classical Rényi divergences for Rényi parameter
α>1 α > 1 . The known proof of this goes by showing that the sandwiched Rényi divergence coincides with the regularized measured Rényi divergence, which in turn is proved by asymptotic pinching, a fundamentally finite-dimensional technique. Thus, while the notion of the sandwiched Rényi divergences was extended recently to density operators on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space (in fact, even for states of an arbitrary von Neumann algebra), these quantities were so far lacking an operational interpretation similar to the finite-dimensional case, and it has also been open whether they coincide with the regularized measured Rényi divergences. In this paper we fill this gap by answering both questions in the positive for density operators on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, using a simple finite-dimensional approximation technique. We also initiate the study of the sandwiched Rényi divergences, and the related problem of the strong converse exponent, for pairs of positive semi-definite operators that are not necessarily trace-class (this corresponds to considering weights in a general von Neumann algebra setting). This is motivated by the need to define conditional Rényi entropies in the infinite-dimensional setting, while it might also be interesting from the purely mathematical point of view of extending the concept of Rényi (and other) divergences to settings beyond the standard one of positive trace-class operators (positive normal functionals in the von Neumann algebra setting). In this spirit, we also discuss the definition and some properties of the more general family of Rényi
(α,z) ( α , z ) -divergences of positive semi-definite operators on an infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space.
