Ideal quantum gases in two dimensions

Abstract

Abstract: Thermodynamic properties of non-relativistic bosons and fermions in two spatial dimensions and without interactions are derived. All the virial coefficients are the same except for the second, for which the signs are opposite. This results in the same specific heat for the two gases. Existing equations of state for the free anyon gas are also discussed and shown to break down at low temperatures or high densities.

Virial coefficients from unified statistical thermodynamics of quantum gases trapped under generic power law potential in $d$ dimension and the equivalence of trapped quantum gases

Mir Mehedi Faruk, Shah Mohammad Bahauddin

From the unified statistical thermodynamics of quantum gases, the virial coefficients of ideal Bose and Fermi gases which are trapped under generic power law potential are derived systematically. From the general result of virial coefficients, one can produce the known results in $d=3$ and $d=2$. But more importantly we found that, the virial coefficients of bosons and fermions become equal (except the the second virial coefficient, where the sign is different) when we trap the gases under harmonic potential in $d=1$. This result suggests the equivalence between Bose and Fermi gases which is already established for $d=1$ by M M Faruk (J Stat Phys, DOI 10.1007/s10955-015-1344-4). Surprisingly our investigation also shows that the virial coefficients of two dimensional free quantum gases are identical to the virial coefficients of one dimensional harmonically trapped quantum gases.

Second virial coefficient for contact-interacting anyons

Paola Giacconi A, Fabio Maltoni B, Roberto Soldati

We study the thermodynamic properties of the anyon gas in the presence of a contact interaction. In particular, we use dimensional and analytical regularizations to calculate the second virial coefficient for free and contact-interacting anyons. The Bethe-Uhlenbeck formula is discussed and it is shown that the same result is regained using the \ensuremath{\zeta} regularization. Finally, the second virial coefficients for contact-interacting particles in two and three spatial dimensions are obtained as special cases. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Deformed quantum statistics in two dimensions

A. Lavagno, Narayana Swamy, P.

It is known from the early work of May in 1964 that ideal Bose gas do not exhibit condensation phenomenon in two dimensions. On the other hand, it is also known that the thermostatistics arising from q-deformed oscillator algebra has no connection with the spatial dimensions of the system. Our recent work concerns the study of important thermodynamic functions such as the entropy, occupation number, internal energy and specific heat in ordinary three spatial dimensions, where we established that such thermostatistics is developed by consistently replacing the ordinary thermodynamic derivatives by the Jackson derivatives. The thermostatistics of q-deformed bosons and fermions in two spatial dimensions is an unresolved question that is the subject of this investigation. We study the principal thermodynamic functions of both bosons and fermions in the two-dimensional q-deformed formalism and we find that, different from the standard case, the specific heat of q-boson and q-fermion ideal gas, at fixed temperature and number of particles, are no longer identical.

Quantum ideal gases: Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics

Mark E. Tuckerman

Abstract Chapter 11 presents a statistical mechanical treatment of the quantum ideal gases, i.e., the ideal Boltzmann, fermion, and boson gases. The discussion begins with the microscopic description and the solution of the eigenvalue problem for a quantum ideal gas. It is argued that calculating the partition function is most readily accomplished in the grand canonical ensemble using a second-quantized formulation. When the particles are distinguishable, the equation of state is identical to that of a classical ideal gas. For fermions and bosons, however, the problem of computing thermodynamic properties is significantly more complex and can only be solved exactly in certain limits. Away from these limits approximations are needed and are discussed in detail. The relevant distributions - the Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein distributions are derived. The local density approximation of density functional theory is derived for the ideal electron gas. For the ideal boson gas, the phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation is discussed
