Excitation of spin-polarized sodium and potassium atoms by electron impact

Muhammad Abdul-Hakim Bukhari, H -J Beyert, M. A. Chaudhry +3 more

A beam of unpolarized electrons is crossed at right angles with a beam of partially polarized sodium or potassium atoms (degree of polarization P A approximately=21%) and resonance lines from the excited 2 P 3/2, 1/2 states are observed in a direction perpendicular to both the atom and electron beams for electron energies from threshold to 200 eV. The polarization of the emitted photons is measured in the form of the Stokes parameters P 1 , P 2 and P 3 . The present measurements for sodium atoms are in better agreement with the theoretical values than the previously published experimental results. No other experimental or theoretical results are available for potassium atoms.

Broadening of spectral absorption lines of atomic potassium under the action of laser radiation

Zh. O. Ninoyan, S O Sapondzhyan, G. S. Sarkisyan

An experimental investigation was made of the broadening of the D lines and of the two-photon absorption line (4S1/2–6S1/2) of potassium vapor subjected to ruby laser radiation. A dye laser beam was used as a probe and this made it possible to record simultaneously all three absorption lines. The measurements were carried out for different polarizations and geometries of the exciting and probe radiations. The observed broadening was attributed to the high-frequency Stark effect in the strong field of the incident wave.

Influence of anti-relaxation coating of optical cells on the potassium D1line saturated absorption

Silvia Gozzini, A. Lucchesini, C. Marinelli +4 more

In this work we present new features observed in the Saturated Absorption (SA) spectrum on the D1 line of K. In an uncoated optical glass cell containing pure K atoms, excitation by circularly polarized pump beam produces an enhancement of the amplitude of the crossover resonances due to the hyperfine transitions starting from the ground state Fg = 2. This effect appears to be much more relevant when K atoms are contained in a cell coated with an anti-relaxation film. Here, the crossover resonance in the Fg = 2 set of transition is not observed experimentally with linearly polarized pump light, while in case of circular polarization its amplitude is significantly enlarged. The Light Induced Atomic Desorption (LIAD) effect strongly improves the intensities of the SA resonances observed in coated cell.
